Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Far too much of our cultural heritage has not been recorded. When the artisan's crafts are no longer practiced, they are tragically lost for future generations. Hastings helps to restore the history of these crafts and craftspeople in a generously illustrated (over 100 illustrations) volume with an accompanying text divided into 13 chapters. Each deals with a specific craft or skill and represents a synthesis of oral interviews with natives of those regions where these arts flourished. Hastings researched this volume for over 20 years, much of it while he was director of the Vermont Folklife Research Project. He verbally describes the skills of the craftspeople--sawmilling, making water tubs or ladder rounds, preparing cider. Many early crafts are described in detail. Hastings not only documents the way of life of rural New Englanders, but his book is also a treasure trove of a culture nearly gone. Recommended for larger academic and public libraries.
