This review is from: The Last Years of the Brooklyn Dodgers (Paperback)
This is a well written book describing the final years of the Dodgers in Brooklyn.
Author Marzano is hung up on the idea that Walter O'Malley was moving the team out of Brooklyn the minute he got control of the club. Why would Walter O'Malley meet Earl Warren, Governor of California, in his private box in Ebbets Field in plain view of everyone in 1953 if this was some sneaky plot to leave? It would seem that a brazen public meeting like that was done to exert political pressure on the New York pols and Robert Moses to get the land for a ballpark in Brooklyn. The stories surrounding the baseball club and their 1950s trials and triumph are fantastic from an author-sportswriter who was there. Enjoyable reading for a genuine baseball fan. I just visited Shea Stadium for the first time and can completely understand why Walter O'Malley told Robert Moses that he wasn't interested in some City owned white elephant in Queens. |
