A Simple but Poignant Sci-Fi Tale, December 23, 2011
This review is from: The Last Yggdrasil (Mass Market Paperback)
Not a lot of people know of Robert F. Young's work but he was a fantastic Sci Fi writer during his time. Often, his work focused more on the human elements -- loneliness, longing, romanticism -- in the midst of sprawling science fiction societies.
The Last Yggdrasill goes into great detail to create the environment of the Plains of New America. He delves into the nature of the Reaper society that lives at the base of a massive tree that has limbs the size of sequoias and also into the pasts of many of the treemen and women who have come to tear it down. As the hero, Tom, climbs down the tree, he is really climbing into the past and the further he climbs down, the more he understands what will be lost when the last tree finally falls. Everything is tied together perfectly in the story and the sense of inevitability is what really drives the book to its final haunting lines.
This is definitely a keeper and for the price of 1 cent plus the shipping, it's well beyond worth it!
