Late Bloomers: a Rose of a Book,
By DeltaDawn (Northern California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Late Bloomers: Awakening to Lesbianism After Forty (Paperback)
I loved this book, from the title on. I don't know if the author intended a pun when she chose the word "bloomers," but I kept thinking about the early feminists who were called bloomers because they dared to wear trousers. This book is about revolutionaries, also, because it tells the true stories of women who dared to become themselves at an older age. The stories all revolve around a theme, of women who usually met a special woman after the age of 40, fell in love, and then had their world spin around. The author/editor sent a survey out to women across the USA, and these stories consist of the responses that she received back. The survey is included as an appendix to the book, and is an interesting read in itself. Try taking the survey together with your friends or your lover, like I did. It will open up some intersting conversations!Buy this book, read this book, share this book. You will come to know and treasure the many women who are scattered throughout the pages, the women who were brave enough and foolhardy enough to follow their hearts.

I have been familiar with this work for sometime now. I recently had a friend, well actually she was a bit more than a friend, you know (?), and she was having problems adjusting to these new feelings she was having. I gave a copy of this work to her and I honestly feel it has changed her life. She no longer feels so alone, so different, so...well, you get my meaning. I have quite a few years to go until I hit the big 40, but can imagine what it would be like if I had not known about myself until I arrived at that age. I actually feel this is a work that should be read by straight women also as I feel it would enable to have a greater understanding of what some of our sisters are going through.

Serious Fun,

I bought this book when it first came out in paperback. After reading it a couple of times and loaning it to friends, it's very worn. I decided to buy the Kindle version, which just became available. For five bucks, how can you go wrong? The author interviewed a lot of women who came out after the age of forty and then grouped their stories in categories. Some of these are so funny. The author's chapter titles and quotes before each chapter are great. There's a lot of humor and warmth in these stories. The stories that were included represent a wide range of lesbian experiences. Some of them are pretty hot. This book would make a fantastic Valentine's Day gift, although I'd probably get the paperback if you want to give it as a gift. But for yourself, get the e-book.
The stories read like fiction, but in the back of the book, the author included the survey she took and the introduction discusses general findings from the survey. It's not really scientific, but it is entertaining and I've known a couple of late bloomers who've appreciated reading experiences like their own, so it may bring some comfort or validation or even encouragement to women in a similar situation. An easy and very good read!
