5.0 out of 5 stars Unforgettable Romantic Comedy
A young family man (Brian Wimmer) and his brother-in-law (Peter Berg) are a couple of good guys who stumble into a bad situation. After a few twists and turns, they end up cryogenically frozen, only to return nearly three decades later to try to reclaim their lives. 2.0 out of 5 stars Pretty boring
This was a pretty slow-moving film for my taste. I thought they really glossed over the troubles that would be inevitable with this kind of situation. This premise- a loved one coming back from the dead- was done MUCH better in "Always" and also in "Truly, Madly, Deeply". This seemed like just kind of a dumb movie, and could have been done so much...

5.0 out of 5 stars Unforgettable Romantic Comedy, December 15, 1999
This review is from: Late for Dinner [VHS] (VHS Tape)
A young family man (Brian Wimmer) and his brother-in-law (Peter Berg) are a couple of good guys who stumble into a bad situation. After a few twists and turns, they end up cryogenically frozen, only to return nearly three decades later to try to reclaim their lives. Wimmer gives an outstanding performance in trying to woo and win back his now much older wife, and Berg is incredible as a chronically ill (and amusingly child-like) young man. Marcia Gay Harden is also excellent as the bewildered wife, and there are many other solid supporting characters.

The film is great entertainment for nearly all ages and tastes. It is funny and sincere, and will leave you with a smile on your face. This is one movie that you will want to OWN. Once you have seen it, you will want to watch it again and again, and share the experience with others. Late for Dinner is a movie that you will never regret and never forget.

OK, the movie is lovely, an old favorite, which has never come out on DVD.
I hadn't tried the "manufactured on demand" videos before and was a bit concerned, seeing how some of those aftermarket videos are produced, but this is pretty close to DVD quality.

No special features, but you know, that's not a bad thing when you consider the trade off is that you pop the DVD in, and the movie starts playing.

Video and sound quality are much better than I expected.

On the run from a crime they didn't commit, the two buddies end up caught in the biggest chill ever: guinea pigs in a dangerous cryonics experiment. Frozen Alive! And they don't thaw out for about 30 years. But they have not aged. Then they go back to their old life, but everything has changed. Can love conquer all? But if love does indeed conquer all, Willie and Joy will have a chance to share their once-in-a-lifetime romance twice.

5.0 out of 5 stars "I LOVE THIS MOVIE FOR SENTIMENTAL REASONS", July 21, 2001

I saw this movie one Saturday afternoon on cable and couldn't stop watching. The sweetness of the story endures. I cried when Willie was reunited with is "older" wife and told her she was more beautiful than before. That was when "I love you for sentimenal reasons" became one of my favorite songs. It is played during the closing credits in which we see family home videos of the reunited family. It is romance at its best.

This is an amusing and touching tale of 2 average but decent guys in very unusual circumstances. It starts in 1962 and ends in 1992. Peter Berg, Brian Wimmer and Marcia Gay Harden are very good in creating characters that you can easily identify with. Is the story a little far fetched? Yes, but who cares? Anyone who enjoys a great love story with humor blended in will find this movie very charming.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favourite Romantic Movie of All Time, April 24, 2001
This review is from: Late for Dinner [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I have almost worn out my VHS version of this movie (the sound is pretty much toast). I would pay almost anything for a DVD of Late For Dinner. Marcia Gay Harden (so glad she was recognized, finally with an Oscar this year), Brian Wimmer and Peter Berg are simply perfect in this romantic, emotional, funny movie. The actress who plays the daughter is also inspired casting. This is my 'sleeper' movie for life...the movie I will always talk about when it comes to 'little movies' that touch your heart and earn a special spot on your movie shelf.

4.0 out of 5 stars Deserving the DVD treatment, December 1, 2006

Agreed, LATE FOR DINNER deserves a remastered, widescreen DVD release. Both Berg and Wimmer are charming, Secor and Gallagher have nice supporting turns, but what a pleasure, catching Ms. Harden's sublime brilliance so early in her film career.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awsome Flick!, June 3, 2001

I loved this movie. Happened to catch it on television one Saturday recently. Before I knew it, I was sitting down and watching every scene, unable to finish what I was doing. Stars Brian Wimmer, Peter Berg and Marcia Gay Hardin. It's about two do-gooder guys, related by marriage, who try to save their house from being repossesed by a ruthless loan shark. There are a lot of twists and turns. You'll fall in love with Willie Husband, played by Brian Wimmer. It's appropriate for kids over 12. Loved it! (no nudity, violence or obscene language, except for two four letter words beginning with sh__.) It will make you laugh and cry!

5.0 out of 5 stars Discovering Brian Wimmer, May 2, 2001

Saturday afternoon, I was tired, trying to get some cleaning done around the house. I turned on the television to keep me company. There was this movie on, apparently had just begun. I stood there with my dust cloth in hand, waiting to see what it was about before I continued on my quest. I was immediatly messmerized. I came out to the livingroom to put it on the big t.v., and told my kids to "come here". We watched this fantastic movie called, "Late For Dinner". By the end I was crying and loving every moment of this touching, sweet movie. It's about a guy and his brother-in-law who unwittingly get frozen with cryogenics, only to wake up 20 years later and not know what happened. The brother-in-law played excellently by Peter Berg is just a tiny bit slow, and may be in part because he needs a new kidney. Brian Wimmer plays "Willie". Willie is the best dad and husband a girl could want. And my whole family fell in love with him. He has a wife and a daughter. The reunion of the family is tender and sweet. Brian is one of the finest actors of this century! Rent it on VHS. It's due out in May, 2001. You won't regret it. This is one the whole family should see!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sentimental favorite..., June 20, 2004
This review is from: Late for Dinner [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Sure, this movie may be a bit on the predictable side, and the whole cryo-stasis thing might be a bit hard to swallow, but once you're able to get to the suspension of belief, what's left is a sweet, sentimental movie that's perfect for you and your special someone to cuddle up to as you watch.

Brian Wimmer and Peter Berg turn in terrific performances as brothers-in-law on-the-run from the authorities because of a crime they didn't commit. Wimmer comes across as being just as honest, caring and sincere as he needs to, which is considerable, since his character and performance depend on it. Berg, playing a somewhat-dimwitted man with a heart of gold is perfect, as he's often been in his minor, but memorable performances. The rest of the cast is more than competent, but the success of this movie depends on its two leads, and they come through with flying colors. You can't help but pull for these guys. One of the first thing a film-maker wants to do is get the audience interested and caring about the main characters, and trust me, you will be...

Funny and sweet, this is the perfect movie for a quiet night alone with your honey. If you consider yourself at all a romantic (love conquers all...and the like), you'll love this movie.
