ok, first off, don't get this cd and expect what you have normally heard from galactic. they have a new producer this time around and he has formulated a different sound. i bought the cd the day it was released, and didn't care too much for it--this is until i saw them play their new songs live. the minute you listen to the cd, you will think, "this is not...

Being from New Orleans and having seen Galactic 15-20 times, I have seen them stray further and further from their groove oriented roots. As a fan of the jazzy style exhibited on Coolin Off, Galactic's first and best releaase, I just can't dig this hard and edgy rock style that the band has developed. Stanton's versatility and agression on drums, Rich Voguls funky spacey sounds on keys and the occassional brilliant flashes of funky jams keep me coming back, but in recent live performances and on Late for the Future, Jeff Raines' hard rock guitar and the metal sound inhibit the groove exhibited on the older material. On Late for the Future, theres more of the gaudy Houseman tracks I've grown to despise, which simply slow the band down and cause them to lose their tightness and fluidity. I dont know why Theryl thinks its hip to wear the same ugly 3 piece suits and dedicate every song to "all the beautiful ladies in the house tonight" every show, but he's no Al Green.

ok, first off, don't get this cd and expect what you have normally heard from galactic. they have a new producer this time around and he has formulated a different sound. i bought the cd the day it was released, and didn't care too much for it--this is until i saw them play their new songs live. the minute you listen to the cd, you will think, "this is not happening. where is galactic?" well, get a ticket to their next show, how ever far you may have to drive, and you will love the cd. after seeing them play nearly every new song live in atlanta, the only complaint i have for the new release is "jeffe 2000" should have been a lot longer (they jammed the sh@t out of this song live). the cd kicks off with an acid-funk-sounding "black eyed pea" and ends with a chillin' "two clowns." so, quit bitching about how they have yet to capture their live sound on their studio cds (can you spell grateful dead?), get "late for the future", cruise to the next show, and respect how this great band has, yet again, expanded their musical repertoire.

5.0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal CD, March 9, 2002

I bought this CD having only a vague idea of who Galactic is and what kind of music they play. This CD rocks! It's pretty New Orleans-flavored funk/jazz with some bite. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Dang CD I've heard this year!, May 31, 2000
This review is from: Late for the Future (Audio CD)
This Disc hasn't left my CD player for weeks. It's just feel good music. The b-3 playing of Vogel is great! Think of a modern day Booker T! All the players on this disc make it a "must have" for anyone who likes to put in a disc and enjoy a funk/groove/jazzy hour or so.

This CD does the best job of capturing Galactic's live energy so far. Stanton Moore let loose on this CD much more than before and the guitar is much stronger. This is by far my favorite CD by Galactic as they have strayed from jazzy funk to a jammed out, cooler sound with explosive energy!

5.0 out of 5 stars FUNK WITH AN EDGE!, April 5, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Late for the Future (Audio CD)
This album is great! It is booty shakin music for the new mellinium. The guys in Galactic have put together a record of tight (yet quite improvisational) originals. The album actually is more a reflection of their live sound than I expected. The music takes more chances, the solos are focused and the interplay between the muciscans is phenominal. Galactic has served up a serving of originality. Funk yes, but more - much more The music is deep, hard, and rockin! LOOK OUT!

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the best feels around, no doubt, April 5, 2001

I clued in onto Galactic after reading an article in Modern Drummer showcasing Stanton Moore. Little did I know that Late For The Future would be one of the best funk recordings that I've ever heard. The New Orleans influence of the group and the drummer gives their music the perfect blend of street beat feel and ripping solos. This almblum is great in so many respects; you can engage in the solos and the composition, or you can just sit back and let the groove do the work. I higly recommend owning this alblum.

4.0 out of 5 stars Buy this CD!, September 29, 2000

This review is from: Late for the Future (Audio CD)
This is a great CD! It would get 5 stars from me, but I save that for Miles Davis or John Coltrane. I heard it featured, briefly, in a story on NPR about a producer's annual barbecue, at which he plays music that has caught his ear for the party crowd. GALACTIC had, maybe, a 20-second spot on the segment. I was hooked. I bought the CD later that week and have not looked back. The only big question about this CD is whether it is my wife's car or mine!

If you like Was Not Was, if you like funk, if you like James Brown, George Clinton, or Sly Stone, if you like Ronald Shannon Jackson, for pete's sake, buy this CD! You owe it to yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars BOOM!, April 6, 2000

This band will blow-up bigger than ever after this release. Galactic is one of many unique & talented bands coming out of the New Orleans music scene right now. If you like extra tight booty-shakin music, grab you a Schlitz, light up and prepair to be transported by the Crescent City's brightest and tightest. Also if you're in New Orleans check out SPLITU. Another band about to pop! These guys sound like a drunken car wreck between the Meters and the Boredoms. They'll BLOW YOUR MIND. Pure garage-swamp-zoize-blues-funk!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very strong, but unneccessarily overproduced, April 9, 2000
By
galactic fan (surprise valley, usa) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Late for the Future (Audio CD)
i am a huge fan of galactic, but there is no doubt that they have yet to completely capture the energy of their live sound on cd. this is a very strong cd with numerous great cuts, but it is unnecessarily overproduced. i had read in advance that this cd was going to stray from their live sound, and i have to ask why. if their goal is to put out something different, then they achieved that goal. if their goal is to put out the best sounds they are capable of, then they have fallen short. i see absolutely no need to studiotize a band as talented as galactic. for instance, doublewide is one of my favorite songs live, and it is completely butchered on this cd. how about a live recording as the next cd release.
