Product Description

Review

This album, first designated for West German consumers in 1980, positions ten tightly arranged recordings from 1963 to 1964 next to concert tracks recorded just before Sam's passing in late 1969. On the early work, songs fade prematurely and an unidentified organist tends to be obtrusive; no matter, Sam still triumphs, his power and exuberance imploding listeners' skulls without losing anything in nuance. -- © Frank John Hadley 1993 -- From Grove Press Guide to Blues on CD

It's easy to review most offerings...."I loved it"..."The best ever"..."Buy this now"... It's all a matter of opinion, right? For some this is a poor quality recording of the traditional 12-bar Chicago blues sound...Thing is; What I hear is true MAGIC. This will touch you. Sam expresses the blues in an understated, joyous, casual, personal manner that can't be easily desribed. If you've heard this you know what I mean. Flat mastering and low average sound quality....but there simply are no adjectives to describe what this will give you, over and over again. If you pass it by you miss an encounter beyond words. Far beyond...

I own most (not exactly "everything", I am not a completist) of Sam's recordings, and I must say that this is one of my very favorites. Of course, I would rate "West Side Soul" as his top masterpiece, but I think that there is here more than something at that classy level, particularly "Torturing My Soul" or "Sometimes". Pure, timeless blues magic!

I HAVE WEST SIDE SOUL AND ITS A CLASSIC SO I HEARD RECORDING FROM THE "LATE GREAT MAGIC SAM" AND HAD TO GET IT. THE REVIEW FROM EDITOR I BELIEVE IS MISTAKEN REGARDING HIS WORDS "OBTRUSIVE" ORGAN. IT HAS THE SAME SOUND AS THE ANIMALS HAD WITH ORGAN AND I LOVE IT. I WOULD USE THE WORD ENHANCE NOT OBTRUSIVE. MATTER OF TASTE PERHAPS BUT SAM NEVER SOUNDED BETTER.

I write from a unique perspective. I never met Magic Sam, but the week before his tragic death he was to be part of a blues bill that I was producing at the University of Rochester in 1969. Luther Allison came to play a tribute, Big Mama Thornton crapped out, but Willie Dixon got me KoKo Taylor with Matt Guitar Murphy, Luther Tucker, Otis Spann and S.P. Leary in her band. I also had John Littlejohn and Lucky Peterson (all but 5-6 yrs. of age) with his dad, James Peterson.
Over the years, I have seen and heard many blues musicians (probably the most notable being Eddie Son House, whom I recorded in my dorm room), but Magic Sam was one of the most electrifying ever. I love Buddy Guy, but players like Otis Rush, Hubert Sumlim, Sam, Luther A., Freddy King truly define blues.
