All the elements of a light Gothic are included in this novel. A young heiress, a dark mansion and a handsome lord of the manor should make a good read but don't be fooled. The novel has little to recommend it to fans of the genre, and it's an unfortunate choice for audio. A more dramatic reading could have compensated for the lack of character development, but the narration verges on monotone. This recording doesn't live up to the expectations raised by the attractive packaging. C.A.K. A young woman named Irene elopes with the wealthy son of a prominent family. When he dies in an accident, she is left pregnant and with no proof the marriage existed. Her husband's illegitimate half-brother, Jason Fonsell, steps in and offers her a marriage of convenience in exchange for a sum of money from her aunt. She accepts and enters into the Fonsell household where the untimely death of Jason's stepmother looms over the family many years after the fact. Our heroine deals with her strong attraction to her new husband and questions the circumstances surrounding the Late Mrs. Fonsell's death after someone else turns up dead. This book is definitely for fans of romantic suspense--there is a real electricity in the relationship between Irene and her husband Jason (they have that love/hate/misundertanding thing happening). I guessed who the bad person was long before it was revealed, but,then, I usually do. : ) Have fun!
