5.0 out of 5 stars solid effort, best yet
This band has gone punk, glam, and rock, and now moving in the same groove of their last album does not fail to impress. The music displays a complexity lacking in their last albums with the instruments harmonizing and cooperating instead of banging away at the same progression. The "sound" retains some of the fuzziness and fun that too much producing can strip...

1.0 out of 5 stars Ouch!!!
This one hurts. I loved Bombs Over Broadway and their self-titled release. I even enjoyed their old ska/punk styled albums, but this one is really a dissapointment. This one hurts. I loved Bombs Over Broadway and their self-titled release. I even enjoyed their old ska/punk styled albums, but this one is really a dissapointment. Now signed to Capitol, have Squad sold out? I asked Jeff, the lead singer of Squad, "what happened to you guys, I listened to the album and it wasn't very good." He said, and I quote, "We tried mixing the Clash with the Stones, but listen to it, you'll get used to it. We had to listen to it a couple times before we liked it too."

Okay so if the band has to get used to their own stuff, I think we have a problem on hand.

This band has gone punk, glam, and rock, and now moving in the same groove of their last album does not fail to impress. The music displays a complexity lacking in their last albums with the instruments harmonizing and cooperating instead of banging away at the same progression. The "sound" retains some of the fuzziness and fun that too much producing can strip from the music. The lyrics are what intrigued me immediatly. The lyrics are mature, socially conscious and at times profound, representing a mind that has awakened to the broken world. The lyrics are gritty, bitter, and always tinged with hopefullness. I highly recommend this album; it's rock with artistic and lyrical strength and integrity. I hope I can thank the band personally for this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm not looking for a Christian punk CD..., March 2, 2005

I'm looking for the best rock CD released in the last few years. Cussing or no cussing, Christian lyrics or not, this CD is absolutely amazing. Forget those that dismiss it for the aforementioned reasons. The lyrics are excellent compared to many CD's of today, they actually have something to say and they say it well. The music is easily the best they have done. This CD is perfect, not a weak track. My favorites are All We Have, Bye American, Secret Society, Keep Me Up At Night and No Heroes. It's pretty pricey here on Amazon, but it is well worth whatever you pay to get your hands on it.

5.0 out of 5 stars DON'T LISTEN TO THE NAY SAYERS!!!, September 15, 2009
This review is from: Late News Breaking (Audio CD)
This and all of their albums are great!!! Jeff and all the others are musical genius's, the ska/punk was what got me into them, and as i grew out of that so did they. Squad Five-O is a great band to have in your collection! So don't listen to the nay sayers, and buy this and all of their albums.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Decent, June 30, 2004

They have distanced themselves from their dgeneration sound. i'm a little disappointed in that. The whole feel of the album is something more along the lines of the replacements with a little bit of fun ska that almost seems distant. the lyrics are decent.

I guess the main thing that i'm disapointed with is the polished sound. it's overproduced and seems really quiet. and there are a couple songs at the end that will definitely be skipped, due to them being overly radio friendly and lacking of gusto.

if you're a squad 5-0, d-generation, replacements fan then pick it up. it's definitely a solid release and worthwhile. I hope that the capitol records move proves to be a good thing. this is definitely a big highlight in the corporate rock scene.

4.0 out of 5 stars Major Label, Major Rock, July 5, 2004

This is by far the best album the Squad have made. No, it's not anthemic like Bomb Over Broadway, and it's not as fast paced as thr self-titled....however, it is far superior. The musicianship is the best, and the lyrics are deeper than anything they've ever made. It does have a Clash feel to some of the song but via Rancid's "Life Won't Wait" album. Hearing Jeff sing lower than on the last album is very nice, although sometimes he struggles to reach some of the low notes. This album pulls influences though from many different bands...there's Springsteen and Top Petty, some Rolling Stones, some Replacements, some Hanoi Rocks, and quite a bit of the a forementioned Clash/Rancid ska. It is nice however to hear a band forge ahead and not try to play the same style they have been playing. (my only question is 'why does everybody have to pull the sell-out card when a band signs to a major label? this is not sell-out music at all. the songs are not radio-friendly unless we were living in the late 70s and 80s.) This is rock n' roll nearly as good as it gets these days. DO NOT PAY ATTENTION TO THE BOTTOM TWO REVIEWS!

4.0 out of 5 stars nothing will ever beat the self -titled album, July 27, 2004
This review is from: Late News Breaking (Audio CD)
i have been a huge fan of sfo for a while and this is probably my 2nd or third favorite one of their albums the s/t one is and will always be their best in my opinion. this is probably tied for second with bombs over broadway. maybe a little better then bombs. overall it is a great album, a solid release. it's a little hard for me to swallow though, being a fan of theirs for so long. they used to sing about their faith and thats why i liked them. with each release though they continue to put less and less stuff about their faith. i mean i never expected to hear cuss words on a squad five-0 album. it is kinda off putting. i'm not a fan of cussing in music and when it's one of my favorite bands, it is kinda disappointing. there are plenty of bands that i could listen to that cuss if i really wanted to hear that. i don't want to hear it on a squad five-0 record though. i guess they wrote what they felt so i shouldn't knock them for that. and to the reviewer that said about jeff saying it took them awhile to get used to it, i don't see how they just kinda combined all the stuff they previoously have done cept maybe bombs. it is wierd that dave wrote most of they lyrics though.

1.0 out of 5 stars Christian band with Cuss words?, January 5, 2005
This review is from: Late News Breaking (Audio CD)
Christian and cussing just can't mix. These guys write great music. They're lyrics however, even though they are heartfelt, are not christian. I am very dissapointed to find out that this band that I liked decided to change. If your looking for a Christian punk cd, then don't buy this, because squad five-O has changed for the worse.
