Belle & Sebastian - Come On Sister

Biography

The best pop groups want to change the world. They want to leave an imprint that no one forgets, to do more than check out as a minor statistic in the Guinness Book of Hit Singles. They want to change the world of pop, and to engage with the politics of pop. Belle & Sebastian have re-invented the pop festival; they signed to a tiny independent label but still beat Steps to a BRIT, before ... Read more in Amazon's Belle & Sebastian Store

To be clear: this is not a Belle & Sebastian album. The poor reviews seem to be based on that misconception. While that may be a disappointment to devoted fans, it is not a commentary on the quality of what this album actually is - a late night mix crafted by Stuart Murdoch and friends for Late Night Tales record label. The album joins previous collections notably curated by such groups as Air, Groove Armada, Trentemøller and (most recently) MGMT.

For those frustrated by the lack of a new B&S album, there is one track here that is performed by Belle & Sebastian - a cover of The Primitives' song "Crash" - the remainder are original recordings by other artists; all are interesting, pleasant down-tempo listening for the after-after party.

I love these "Late Night Tales" CDs, having bought 5 in the series already. The basic theme --- having an artist choose songs that they think are special or worthy or attention, or perhaps ones that influenced their own sound --- is a terrific idea, and shows the diversity of influences in the music of bands such as Belle and Sebastian.

Maybe this CD won't automatically appeal to all Belle and Sebastian fans, seeing as how they only have one track on here (a darn cool cover of the Primitives hit "Crash"), but I would think anyone who listens to that group would be open-minded enough to give this CD a listen and perhaps discover some appealing new songs. I sure did. That's another one of the cool things about this "Late Night Tales" series; the featured artist always chooses a few obscure tracks by bands that aren't well known, but are almost always great choices.

On this CD, some of those "new to my ears" selections that made a very favorable impression include "A Time for Us" by Joe Pass (great jazz guitarist but this track also has a female vocal), "Soul Vibrations" by Dorothy Ashby (cool jazz harpist), "Bird of Space" by Bonnie Dobson (nice folk tune), "Streets of Derry" by Trees (sounds a lot like Sandy Denny and Fairport Convention), and "Still Thinking of You" by Steve Parks (I could have sworn this was Paul Weller singing!). I also love the tracks by Tory Y Moi, the Lovin' Spoonful, Broadcast, and the Ethiopian jazz legend Mulatu Astatqe. Hey, it's all good!

As with the other CDs in this series, you get a booklet that has a short writeup on each track, telling why the band member who choose that song thought it was noteworthy. Spanning several decades of music (from the 1960s to the present decade) this compilation flows well and offers some truly excellent music. Give it a chance and prepare to be impressed.

Got this after finding it on Spotify and so glad I did. Love the label and what they do. Its great to have a way to get inside the heads of the artists. Sounds so much better in lossless.

Did not disappoint. The series is great overall and some are better than others but each one always turns me on to new sounds and shifts my perspective. Belle & Sebastian's LNT 1 and 2 are both wonderful in different ways and I could never pick a favorite among the two, so treat yourself and buy both.

More fool me. Thought this was a new Belle and Sebastian release. Instead it's a compilation of favorite tracks that I don't give a damn about. Poser nonsense. LateNightTales indeed. It's going straight into the garbage. What a rip.
