Read clearly before you preach,

Just wanted to say that this CD is great, and it was intended to be a COMPILATION of the best tracks that have inspired Jay, not a new Jamiroquai CD with new material (as was falsely outlined above). Just wanted to clarify. Thanks ;) If you like retro disco/soul/rnb/funk, and generally the old classics in these genres, give this one a listen.

True to the roots...........,

I guess a lot of people out there do not understand the concept of this album. This is not an album produced or arranged by Jamiroquai. No Jay Kay vocals - nothing like that. No, this album merely REFLECTS the ROOTS of the Jamiroquai sound. Listen to it in that mindset and you won't be disappointed. Take for instance the cut by Ramsey Lewis, "Whisper Zone". You can't tell me you don't hear elements of this song in Jamiroquai's music. I would have given this album a full 5 stars, but one of my favorite tracks on the album was not converted over in the best possible quality. That track is "Girl, I Think the World About You" by The Commodores. You can hear this song's influence on many of Jamiroquai's cuts. Unfortunately, it's pretty fuzzy on this album. Other than that, I have no issues with it. It's cool to be able to explore the roots of someone's sound. If you are a true Jamiroquai fan or a fan of acid jazz in general I think you'll find it quite funky!

Some People Just Don't Get It....,

Look, I saw this CD on the shelf for the first time two weeks ago. By looking at the CD jacket, it was very clear to me that [1] This was a compilation of other artists, and [2] These are the songs that influenced Jamiroquai during his career. By the way, the Late Night Tales series also feature CD's by Sly and Robbie and Nightmares on Wax.With that said, this is a CD you should still buy. Jamiroquai's song selection pleasantly surprised me. 'Stay Free' by Ashford and Simpson and 'Happiness' by the Pointer Sisters are two of the most overlooked jams in R&B! True Garage Classics If y'all know what I mean ; ) Jose Feliciano's 'California Dreaming' is more emotionally charged than the Mammas & The Papas' version. Johnny Hammond's 'Fantasy' is always smooth, and Sister Sledge's 'Pretty Baby' has Chic written all over it (surprise, surprise, Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards wrote the song). Make sure you save room for Patrice Rushen, Kleer and the mandatory Chaka Khan. This is a very solid collection. Kudos to Jamiroquai for calling attention to some very important music in Funk/R&B history.

A funky cd,
By A Customer
This review is from: Late Night Tales (Audio CD)
This cd is funky. Bottom line. Just like Jamiroquai's last release "A Funk Odyssey"! Someone left a review claiming that Jamiroquai just wants to profit off of these songs. This person doesn't even realize that Jamiroquai does not own the rights to the songs on this cd, therefore will not be getting major profit off of them, if any profit at all. Ignore ignorant reviews like that one and buy this cd if you're into old school funky music that have inspired Jamiroquai!

Just a general comment,
This review is from: Late Night Tales (Audio CD)
I haven't heard this CD but of the samples I listened to it seemed like it does it's job. This is for any of the reviewers who may return here. Now when I saw the cover, instantly I knew it wasn't an album of jamiroquai songs. I thought it was an interview CD or something like that. Does it look like a Jamiroquai cover? NO! come on people! You can't call yourself a jamiroquai fan (or smart for that matter) if you thought this was a Jamiroquai album. Haven't you noticed the similiarity between the past covers? Get a clue.

A great, funky CD full of rare, lesser known tracks from the 70's and early 80's. Being a huge Jamiroquai fan for years, I was glad they put this album out. After listening to it, you will definitely be able to compare and hear the influences that 70's music has on Jamiroquai's funky, unique sound. This is a good CD to add to your Jamiroquai collection, or if you are still unfamiliar with their music, this CD gives a good introduction in educating the listener on how Jamiroquai has evolved into what it is today.

I can't understand those reviewers who purchased this album thinking that this was a Jamiroquai CD. Come on folks! Did you read the track listing on the back? Not only does it list the tracks, it lists the original artists as well.
Upon listening to the album, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that these artists clearly influenced Jamiroquai's sound. Songs like "Once You Get Started" by Rufus and "Happiness" by The Pointer Sisters will resonate with all of Jamiroquai's fans. I also love "Here's To You" by Skyy, "Tonight's The Night" by Kleer and "Pretty Baby" by Sister Sledge. This compilation will get you off the couch and have you dancing in no time. If it doesn't, then nothing will!

Just not up to the Late Night series,
This review is from: Late Night Tales (Audio CD)
Nice to have it no doubt, though out of the Late Night series, this is definitively below the standards set. Try the Tommy Guerrero or the Kid Loco ones, they take it to another level.Word up. 8

Good but ...,

I think the selection of songs on this album are great. Hopefully by now you realize that this is not a Jamiroquai album, but rather an album of songs that Jay Kay of Jamiroquai likes a lot/influenced him/etc. None of the obvious funk hits that you might be aware of already. My only gripe with this is the really brief commentary. The cd booklet gives each song one or two sentences by Jay Kay. That's it. I really would have appreciated a bit more background info/analysis of these particular songs/info I may not know about the artist. Otherwise a nice cd and if you're into Jamiroquai you will probably like the cuts.

Old songs, that are new to me. An education, so to speak. A fun collection of songs that can suit any time of day. Cures your blues on a rainy day, and makes the sun seems brighter when its shining outside. Just pulls you out and makes you happy no matter what.
