Rulers, Ruling All Things

An antiphon is a call-and-response style of singing, from Gregorian chants to sea shanties. In the case of Denton, Texas’ favorite sons Midlake, it’s the perfect title for a bold response to a new phase in the band’s illustrious career, with a re-jigged line-up and a newly honed sound as rich and symphonic as it is dynamic and kaleidoscopic.

Editorial Reviews

2011 installment in the Late Night Tales compilation series. Carefully selecting tracks from the likes of uniquely creative Comus, to obscure Edinburgh threesome Bread, Love And Dreams, Midlake's is certainly one of the more enchanting and captivating track listings. Journeying across the plains of North America, the wilds of the British Isles and fleeting visits to Holland and Iceland, Midlake's Late Night Tales is a voyage through all that mesmerises and enchants. Incorporating tracks from the likes of deeply seductive vocalist Scott Walker to Bjork (a frequent among the Late Night Tales compilations) Midlake's instalment certainly does not disappoint. Beach House's captivating and thought provoking 'Silver Soul' further launches Midlake's compilation into the realm of the imaginary and magical. As with all Late Night Tales instalments, Midlake add their own unique twist to the compilation with their exclusive and much honoured acoustic cover of Black Sabbath's 'Am I Going Insane'.

This is what I love about various artist compilations: a CD that offers a few familiar tunes or artists, along with a bunch of song that I've never heard before, but ones that really impress me.

First of all, this is NOT a Midlake recording, although they do have one song on here, an unlikely cover of an old Black Sabbath song (I'm not Black Sabbath fan, but their version of this tune is really cool). Instead, these are songs selected by the band members in Midlake, songs that they love or have influenced them during their recording career.

If you've followed Midlake over the years, you won't be surprised by some of the selections on this CD, ranging from folk-rock staples like Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span to influential artists such as The Band and Scott Walker. But some of the more obscure tracks on here are the real ear-openers and highlights, especially songs by Bob Carpenter, Bread Love & Dreams, Lazarus, and Jimmy Spheeris. For added cool factor, you get contemporary offerings from Beach House, Bjork, and Espers, plus some vintage tunes from Nico, Sandy Denny, Rodriguez, and the Flying Burrito Brothers. It's an ambitious, eclectic batch of songs, but it works. I love the way that it flows and the way that the music moves me.

I think most fans of Midlake will appreciate these well-chosen selections, and perhaps inspire them to check our more music by some of the artists that are included. But this CD will also appeal to any discerning listener who appreciates great music, whether the songs were recorded in the 1960s, or during this decade. Timeless music. Really.
