As a big fan of the Late Night Tales/Another Late Night series, this is one of the more disappointing ones, almost down there with the Snow Patrol collection. The best by far are Kid Loco, Belle and Sebastian, Air, and Tommy Guerrero.

The songs are great. If you want to know what they sound like... listen to them. I can't explain it here, and won't even try. What I will say is that this is just a wall of emotional music that stirs you. Of course, you have to let it. Anyone can stick it in the CD player and fold there arms and grumble about the state of the world, but I ask, why would you do that to yourself?!?
This collection is an amazing journey of rarities that are so hard to find in their own right nowadays, and a heap of classics that just need to owned. Do yourself a favour and buy this CD, even if you're not a Turin Brakes fan. Remember, it's a CD of their influences, not them. I myself am a Turin Brakes fan. I became one after listening to this CD. I thought to myself, 'how can a band have these influences and not deliver?' I heard the cover that Turin Brakes did of The Rolling Stone's 'Moonlight Mile', and for weeks, I thought that it was the Stones doing a more laid back version until I read the liner notes properly! I believe that Turin Brakes have done the Late Night Tales collection justice by wearing their heart on their sleeves with this collection of influences, and then they've gone a step further and done justice to their influences by putting out their own well rounded and polished product. Since entering into Turin Brakes' music, this CD has even more to offer than before. I hear each of these songs and can see where the band has taken its cue to start doing what they're doing today in music. But I hear more than that. I hear a real journey of musicology that takes me somewhere where I really enjoy being; the production of this CD is an art in itself. Whoever said 'this song goes first, and then this one...' knew what they were doing! I recommend this CD to anyone wanting a 'laid back, need to study, glass of red wine evening; having friends over and want to impress with some smooth tunes that aren't jazz; just need to empty the head of all the issues; new perspective on folk music.' This CD will give you all those things and more.
