Late Night Truck Stop - Little Feat Bootleg,
By Edie Ondrusek (Aliquippa, PA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Late Night Truck Stop (Audio CD)
I have listened to this CD, and it certainly deserves its 5 star rating. However, it is a BOOTLEG, and the band members are not making a penny from it. Paul Barrere of Little Feat is urging everyone not to buy it. (...)

Are we all listening to the same disc?,
By
This review is from: Late Night Truck Stop (Audio CD)
After reading all the reviews here (most being very bitter) I had to wonder - Is everyone mad at the fact that the disc is REALLY poor quality, or is the fact that the band isn't getting any money from it. The truth: This disc is great! I wasn't around in the Feat's early days, but if this is what the fans consider "bad", bring on the really good stuff! I've heard enough bootleg recordings to know what a soundboard show sounds like, and this is not a "muddy mix" or "poorly played" as other reviewers have said. I'm sure the band has many unreleased live recordings that are better, but until they are "officially" released, this will be on my stereo over and over...

A dubious pedigree,

The "label" putting out this copy of a bootleg (aka Snakes On Everything or just "Live At Ebbetts Field, 7.19.73, Denver, CO, both shows", but without all the tracks from both shows in this case), claims to have a release from Warner Brothers. But Warner Brothers has not represented Little Feat for many years. Little Feat considered legal action and putting out their own version on their new Tomato Lady records, but after listening to the tracks, considered the quality not up to their standards and a legal challenge not worth it.I have a fairly good copy of these shows recieved in trade a few years back; it's fair quality. I believe the source is from an FM broadcast. And many of the songs do not appear on other live recording in circulation - Hamburger Midnight, Texas Rose Cafe, Snakes On Everything and Cat Fever.

1973 live sets shows 2nd Feat line-up still working on it...,
By
This review is from: Late Night Truck Stop (Audio CD)
This bootleg release is important mostly for historical reasons. It was recorded very early in the history of the 2nd Feat line up wherein Paul Barrere and Kenny Gradney joined the band. The sound quality and level of performance varies wildly on this 2 CD set. The material is taken mostly from the first 2 studio albums with a smattering of tracks from Dixie Chicken which are well-performed. When I compare this to the Feat I saw live 3-4 years later they hardly seem like the same band. Rough, but interesting to hardcore fans.

After reading some of the bad customer reviews for this CD,I had to submit my own thoughts. First of all, I'm so apolitical that I couldn't even muster the will to not buy the CD (even if some people have urged boycotting it). If Paul Barrere and the other members aren't getting compensation, I wish that they would dig up some other tapes of shows from that time period and start making some money. I know I'd buy 'em !This particular show is the best example of Little Feat yet released: smoking guitar parts from Barrere and George, incredible peaks generated by some of the best interplay between musicians heard on any live recording,(see Cat Fever, On the Way Down, Dixie Chicken/Tripe Face Boogie), beautifully delivered vocals-- and all contained in a raucous, gritty, club atmosphere. The sound, to me, isn't bootleg quality at all: granted, the sound has a few crackles, and the mix fades in and out a bit on some songs, but the sound is probably very much like it sounded in the club that night-- in any event, as good as any live recordings from 1973. Man, you can't get any better than Little Feat were that night. I highly recommend this CD.

Incredible! The best most honest Feat recording of all!,

This recording is the purest Little Feat out there. The sound quality is actually excellent despite what other reviews might lead you to believe. You can hear the guitar pick on the strings, breaths being taken, every little detail of the room! The show was in a small venue where the musicians and the crowd seem very comfortable which shines through in the music. YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE IN THE ROOM! Their classic albums are must-owns of course, but this is THE CROWN JEWEL!

Being a converted Little Feat fan just for a few years now, it is quite funny to see the intensity of the argumentation from both sides: great stuff (although bootleg) opposed too illegal junk with poor sound quality....Of course it isn't right that bandmembers do not receive royalties from this cd, on the other hand it truly is a great concert from the early Feats when they still sounded unpolished. The argument that the sound quality was a reason for Barrere not to put it out themselves seems a load of crap judging from the poor sound quality of some of the Raw/Ripe Tomato cd's, which I also love, be it just for music historical reasons.....

This is a wonderful live CD. The band at its very best. Lowell George at his very best. As for complaints by surviving band members that they won't be personally enriched by it, well, I frankly don't care. They've been skating on the reputation of Lowell George for over thirty years. That's more than enuf cash money for all concerned.
