5.0 out of 5 stars POWERFUL, ROMANTIC, PASSIONATE, & SOUL-STIRRING!, June 21, 2000
This review is from: Late Nite (Audio CD)
This is a must own CD; for the above 4 reasons! And here's the best reason: you can come home from work and no matter how bad your day was this will relax, soothe and uplift you!

I am listening to it right now and the title track "Late Night" says it all; no words needed. I love instrumental rock played this way! There are also some songs with Neal singing and his voice is just as powerful and passionate as his music!

My favorites and which I also think every music lover will appreciate are: 1) LATE NIGHT 2) I'LL BE WAITING 3)SOFTLY 4) RAIN'S COMIN' DOWN 6)STEPS 7) THE THEME 8) LE DOME (this order changes often for me; depending on my mood. It is really hard deciding an order!)

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR SPECIAL MOOD MUSIC THIS IS IT! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CD!

One more comment, any artist that puts an unusual song like "Blackened Bacon" with songs as these is a TRUE ARTIST; daring, unafraid, and eccentric. Let's face it, to make it in this world you have to have all these qualities!

2 thumbs up, Neal! Thanks for your inspiration!

5.0 out of 5 stars TOP NOTCH INSTRUMENTAL ROCK, February 6, 2000

This album is awesome. I was not disappointed at all when I bought this, in fact, I couldn't stop listening to it over and over. Most of the CD is instrumental rock, but Neal sings on about 4 songs or so. Schon's guitar playing is chilling and filled with passion and emotion. I think this CD was kind of overshadowed by him joining Bad English so quickly after this was released. I love great guitar playing and there's no shortage of it here.

4.0 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 stars, April 13, 2002
This review is from: Late Nite (Audio CD)
Neal has never been a singer, but im my opion he is the best guitarist, in the world, bar none. One would expect an instrumental cd from Neal, and that is what I was hoping for with this cd, but it's not what I got. I was very pleased. Neal plays the guitar with a firery passion, that would take a great vocalist to match him, and not to be overshadowed by him. Neal for the most part Neal's vocals are overshadowed, but not consumed by his playing. And for some reason this only adds to the music.
Late Nite and Softly are the outstanding tracks on this cd, and the rest are not far behind. The music feels heart felt and not by the numbers, like some of Journey's later songs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Return To The Future, February 18, 2002

When I first heard this album I was sitting behind the console at Neal's Gush Studio, which was Journey's studio for 20 years.
Neal's people looked at with with great pride as we listened.
It reminded me of the first time I saw Journey at Winterland in San Francisco New Year's Eve with my High School Date.

The chills that went up my spine back in the mid 70's, returned.
This solo music from Neal Schon took me back to the original excitement of Journey, the rock fusion jam band that caught my imagination first as a 15 year old East Bay teenager. The first time I heard Journey, I was hooked. When I listen to this solo album from Neal, I remember why.

These are beautiful music-scapes that take you to another world. Close your eyes, you have a passport to another realm. Most of this album is mostly instrumental, but there are a few notable exceptions with Neal's voice featured. Neal sings like he plays, he rocks and his voice emotes like his playing soars in his signature style. If you like space music, progressive rock, jazz-rock fusion, well structured chord changes, tension and release, melodic guitar solos and instrumental rock anthems...BUY THIS.

This is an album for the ladies. I put it on the CD Player, turn down the lights and get lost in my girlfriend. That's what this album is all about. Listening to mind blowing beautiful melodies,
Neal's mystical guitar...play this album for your woman. See if I'm wrong.

This music reminds me of the best of Journey's live shows. Two dollars on Tuesday nights. Bill Graham called it "Sounds Of the City. Most of the best Bay Area bands played those nights. Journey was blowing away the competition, their was a buzz. Listen to this album and you'll get a taste of what it was like to see Journey at their peak as a fusion band, before Perry. It was another animal.

Neal's solo album is the best of both worlds. Original Journey fire is re-kindled in this albums. It's reminiscent of Journey's first album but it's stronger production. When I play this album I also get out the first Journey album with George Tickner and Aynsley Dunbar. It's a fantastic combination to play back to back. It's a journey through the past, to the future. Back to the future. Neal re-claims his soul in this absolutely fantastic solo album. The only other album I would give as much praise is Little Steven's & The Disciples Of Soul's "Voice Of America".
These two albums have more guitar fire than anything I've heard since Jimi Hendrix.

Buy this album. Have fun listening to it. Impress your girlfriend. You'll end up turning on everyone you know to this rare, totally under-appreciated jewel of a CD. If you don't like it I'll buy your copy back from you for full retail price.

5.0 out of 5 stars I wore mine out!, August 14, 2000
This review is from: Late Nite (Audio CD)
I got the tape and played it to death. Neal is a great tasteful player that can get down and dirty with the best of 'em. His accomplishments, or lack of, with Journey don't even hold a candle to this. This is money well spent and I was always surprised by his voice. If this had come out at a different time from it's intial release date, it would have been a screamer up the charts.

i bought the cassette of this in 1989 while in the military. I have played it endlessly over the course of 10 years. This is THE BEST mood cd. Good for relaxing, winding down, or sharing with that special someone. I cant say enough how much the music on this title has meant to me.

5.0 out of 5 stars As the title implies, this is a great "date" disc., November 21, 1998

Always an incredible guitarist, Neal Schon soars with this, hisfirst solo album. His instrument sings fluidly throughout, and so does he. It's been a while since we've heard his voice, but he reminds us that he's got a pretty good one. This album is a must for those Late Nites, sharing a bottle of wine in front of a roaring fire.

I am a guitarist, producer, and engineer of 25 years. This CD has been my number 1 for the past 16 years since its debut -and I would be hard-pressed to find a replacement. Midnight blues with a touch of sophistication is the only technical way to describe this. Neal just pours his heart into these songs with every note he plays.

I have to admit I can't get enough of Neal Schon. I especially love the song "Softly." Neal isn't the greatest singer in the world, but his singing voice isn't the point. Something about this song speaks volumes from the heart, and it touched mine.
