5.0 out of 5 stars Singer/stylist of the first magnitude
Dakota Staton's LATE LATE SHOW accompanied me into basic training in the army. Played on a cheap record player in the shower room of our barracks (for the acoustics) for the first time, the demands for repeats from my buddies were incessant. Her stylistic singing of a magnitude equal to Ella, Vaughan, and Peggy is nothing less than sheer consummate listening...

Dollars to doughnuts, those who buy this CD will become instant fans of her vocal arrangements of everybodys' favorites.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Duophonic's gotta go., April 7, 2006
This review is from: Late Late Show (Audio CD)
Agree completely with John Griffin that the Duophonic master should NOT have been used for a CD release. Duophonic was Capitol's ersatz stereo re-processing so they could sell a simulated stereo version of a MONO recording. These Duophonic (and their ilk) releases showed up in the 1960's as a way for the record companies to charge premium (stereo) prices for old catalog products.

Boo, hiss to the person making that call. Should have been a nice, clean MONO transfer off the original session tapes. Capitol recordings of that era have a very good sound, and the Duophonic process negates the fine work in the recording studio.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dakota Staton lives on...., August 31, 2000

I grew up with this album. I remember I could not afford to buy one and had to visit a friend just to hear Dakota. I remember copying her style, every nuance, every breath and later when I became a professional singer hearing her in some of my phrases. Where is she now? I would love to thank her for guiding me through my musical career...and she did not even know she was doing it! The most memorable song of hers for me is: "Morning, Noon and Night". All the rest of the songs in many of her albums I still know by heart. Wherever you are Dakota, you and your music lives on in many of your admirers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible, unforgettable, - absolutely la creme de la creme, January 31, 2000

What can I say? Each and every song she sang on this cassette is Numero Uno! I had the LP disc years ago - have the cover and nothing in it. Finally, I turned to the NET and Amazon was the only one who had it. I am ecstatic. She is a songbird - this cassette should be on CD. There is another song she sings and does it with George Shearing called "In the Night". Cannot find it. Do you have it hiding somewhere. I am also interested in George Shearing's album Latin Lace - another one from the past, but it's DYNOMITE. Shearing and Staton are wonderful together!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Lost Shearing Albumn, April 5, 2003

To the reviewer who asked about the George Shearing albumn with Dakota Staton. It was released in 1958 and was titled, "IN THE NIGHT". The only cut I have ever heard is the absolutely wonderful "I Hear Music" which is a selection on her "SPOTLIGHT ON DAKOTA STATON" which is available on CD. Apparently the Shearing albumn is not available on CD ALTHOUGH I URGE CAPITOL TO DO SO!! There are hundreds of Dakota Staton fans waiting for that CD. I will even consider the purchase of the 33 if anyone out there has a clean copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Late,Late Show: never too late to discover Dakota Staton, January 22, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Late Late Show (Audio CD)
I'm crazy about this album, and I've been playing the "Give Me A Simple Life" cut so many times that my cat is ready to hide under the couch. This 1957 recording session features Dakota Staton when she was young and sassy and swinging like crazy. It's a different sound from her later years where her style became tinged with more of a blues/gospel feel. If the sound of a jazz singer can make you happy, this album will do it! Dakota's pheonomenal voice is backed by a terrific small combo that includes Hank Jones on piano and Jonah Jones on trumpet. And if you like this one, you're sure to like her other 1957 recording, More Than The Most, which features her fronting a big band.

This album in LP format introduced me to Dakota Staton in 1957. I still have it, as well as In The Night with George Shearing. They became favorites in my music collection, and everyone I played them for wanted them; I never tired of her singing. She was as good as any and superior to most. The songs on this one really show off her talents in voice and phrasing. Great listening.

5.0 out of 5 stars Found It At Last!, January 21, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Late Late Show (Audio CD)
I owned "The Late, Late Show way back in the 1950"s. Miss Staton was my favorite blues singer. This album is as fresh and lively as in the 50's! It is timeless!! I moved away from NY and left all my albums behind. I could kick myself! I couldn't remember the titles but CDNOW was fabulous! I am also looking for Dakota Staton and George Shearing album in CD format. Could anybody tell me where to find it or at least, the title of it. It was also one of my favorites! The cover had a grand piano and Miss Staton standing. I think. Cover was very classy.
