2.0 out of 5 stars old shut eyes
The lithe and suave club-hopping Italiano who made them swoon with his loose and boozy croon is a distant memory on this expansive collection of late night lullabies. As evidenced in the kitsch cartoon cover and sleepy song selection, the emphasis is on snooze (Dream, I'll Buy That Dream, All I Do Is Dream Of You, Dream A Little Dream Of Me)not booze, bright lights or...

This review is from: Late at Night With Dean Martin (Audio CD)
Finally a CD that includes Dean's "intimate" version of "Everybody Loves Somebody;" (sans Jimmy Bowen's overdone, whalloping orchestrations heard on the "hit" single). What a pleasure to hear Dino sing with only the backing of Ken Lane's piano. A bit of trivia: "Everbody Loves Somebody" was included as an afterthought on the orginial LP, "Dream With Dean," released in 1964 on Reprise. Other songs that were part of that set, including, "Baby Won't You Please Come Home," "I'll Buy That Dream," "I'm Confessin'," and "Melancholy Baby," are included in this terrific compilation. Hopefully the Martin family will release the entire "Dream With Dean" album sometime soon. After listening to this CD three or four times I thought what a shame that Dean didn't take his profession more seriously, having spent far too much time recording psuedo Country and Western albums in the sixties. (Not to mention forgetable albums with titles like, "Dino Latino," and "Dean Martin French Style.") Just imagine having five or six "concept" albums today with great arrangers like Nelson Riddle, Gordon Jenkins, Don Costa, and Quincy Jones, working with Dino. Thank heavens for Frank Sinatra's foresight in putting together such a magnificent archive of his music. Put this CD on right after Dean's "This Time, I'm Swinging," and you'd have listened to his greatest work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dino After Dark: A Cool Dude In A Loose Mood, January 22, 2000
This review is from: Late at Night With Dean Martin (Audio CD)
This version of "Everybody Loves Somebody" is worth the price of admission alone. In my opinion, its better than the version that knocked the Beatles out of the #1 spot back in '64. This stark rendition conjures up images of Dean sitting on his barstool by the piano smoking a cigarette. God, he was the King of Cool. You can hear a world-weariness in his voice but never to the point where he appears to exert any effort whatsoever in his impeccable singing style. This CD puts together the some of the best of his boozy/bluesy style. Listen to " I'm Confessin' " and you'll understand. It was this style that prompted Mel Torme to say of Dean: "He makes a plate of spaghetti look tense." Hey Mel. You ain't kiddin' man. Anyway, this is Dino at his romantic best. When this CD goes in, the missus knows she's in trouble. That's Amore!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dream with Dean, March 25, 2000
This review is from: Late at Night With Dean Martin (Audio CD)
An excellent compliation of Capitol & Reprise gems. Five tracks have been culled from Dean's 1964 Reprise LP Dream With Dean. The version of EVERYBODY LOVES SOMEBODY is a much more tranquil version of his signature song. A stripped to the bone rendition with a small four-piece combo of guitar, bass, drums, & piano. This is Dean at his finest. Sinatra can't compete with this stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY THE SMOOTHEST AND THE MOST ROMANTIC, January 28, 2000
This review is from: Late at Night With Dean Martin (Audio CD)
I just got this CD and I can't play it enough. Where have these great arrangements by Dino been? I thought I heard them all, but let me say that even though I have heard these melodies sung by Dean before, I have not heard these renditions and I gotta tell ya, MAGNIFICENT IS THE WORD! You will not be disappointed. Meloncholy Baby, I'm Confessin and Everybody Loves Somebody really puts you in a mood, believe me.

This is definitely Dino at his best! I'm listening to it as I write this review and the ease and smoothness of his voice is beyond words!
Everybody Loves Somebody, Dream, I'm Confessin show Dino at his soulful best - every word he sings he means!

I listen to this cd at least once a day!

A must have for all Dino fans!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Quiet Side of Dino..., April 10, 2002

This review is from: Late at Night With Dean Martin (Audio CD)
This is a wonderful concept album, featuring a quiet, romantic Dean singing great late night songs.

The version of "Everybody Loves Somebody" on this disc is, as others here have mentioned, nice and mellow. Other great songs from Dino's repertoire are given a similar treatment, like "I'm Confessin' (That I Love You)", and "Arrivederci Roma". The end result is a quiet, late night sound for romantic swingers, courtesy of the King of Cool, Dean Martin.

Other great songs include "All I Do Is Dream of You", "Imagination", "Mean to Me", "I'll Buy That Dream", and "I Wish You Love".

Although it's a great version, and I can see how easily it fit into the "Late at Night" style, I have to admit that "Dream a Little Dream of Me" is a bit of an odd addition to the CD. The song is so readily identified with The Mamas & The Papas that it's kind of strange to hear someone else sing it. Same for "My Melancholy Baby", which I don't really associate with Dean. I would have rather had Dean doing "You're Nobody 'Till Somebody Loves You" than either of those two tracks. Other than that, I have no squawks at all with the selections.

I love the artwork on the insert, and the concept of the album, and, of course, it's Dino!

5.0 out of 5 stars Smooth, easy perfection, July 7, 2003

This review is from: Late at Night With Dean Martin (Audio CD)
This CD was the perfect addition to my ever growing Dean Martin collection. The track selection perfectly sets a warm romantic mood but can also create a lazy sleepy feel as i have found out myself. I have put this CD in many times late at night and fallen alseep listening to the nearly tangible smoothness of Dino's voice.
The only down point to the CD is that "Mean To Me"(a perfect musical score but a little cutesy), "Imagination" (also cutesy) and "I Wish You Love" (which has beat uncharacteristic to the rest of the album), although soft and romantic, seem slightly out of place. "You Belong To Me" or "My Heart Reminds Me" would be more befitting the mood the other songs create.
The other songs, however, are wonderful, each perfectly complimenting the one before it. The first track, "Everybody Loves Somebody" starts it off with the smooth, easy (almost lazy)style that is so distictive of Dino. "Baby, Won't You Please Come Home" (which has a soft bluesy tone) and Let me love you tonight were tailor made for Dino's warm baritone voice.
Start you collection with this cd or add it to you collection either way you will NOT be dissappointed.

Is there a voice that can be compared with Dino's? Not in my book. This selection is soft and seductive - a perfect compilation of songs for late night listening. It's a great addition to the collections of Dean Martin fans or a welcome treat added to a non-Martin CD library.
