5.0 out of 5 stars Read clearly before you preach, November 12, 2003
By A Customer
Just wanted to say that this CD is great, and it was intended to be a COMPILATION of the best tracks that have inspired Jay, not a new Jamiroquai CD with new material (as was falsely outlined above). Just wanted to clarify. Thanks ;) If you like retro disco/soul/rnb/funk, and generally the old classics in these genres, give this one a listen.

4.0 out of 5 stars True to the roots..........., December 15, 2004
By Trent Banks (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews
I guess a lot of people out there do not understand the concept of this album. This is not an album produced or arranged by Jamiroquai. No Jay Kay vocals - nothing like that. No, this album merely REFLECTS the ROOTS of the Jamiroquai sound. Listen to it in that mindset and you won't be disappointed. Take for instance the cut by Ramsey Lewis, "Whisper Zone". You can't tell me you don't hear elements of this song in Jamiroquai's music. I would have given this album a full 5 stars, but one of my favorite tracks on the album was not converted over in the best possible quality. That track is "Girl, I Think the World About You" by The Commodores. You can hear this song's influence on many of Jamiroquai's cuts. Unfortunately, it's pretty fuzzy on this album. Other than that, I have no issues with it. It's cool to be able to explore the roots of someone's sound. If you are a true Jamiroquai fan or a fan of acid jazz in general I think you'll find it quite funky!

5.0 out of 5 stars Some People Just Don't Get It...., January 12, 2004
By R. Golden (New York (for today...)) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Look, I saw this CD on the shelf for the first time two weeks ago. By looking at the CD jacket, it was very clear to me that [1] This was a compilation of other artists, and [2] These are the songs that influenced Jamiroquai during his career. By the way, the Late Night Tales series also feature CD's by Sly and Robbie and Nightmares on Wax.

With that said, this is a CD you should still buy. Jamiroquai's song selection pleasantly surprised me. 'Stay Free' by Ashford and Simpson and 'Happiness' by the Pointer Sisters are two of the most overlooked jams in R&B! True Garage Classics If y'all know what I mean ; )

Jose Feliciano's 'California Dreaming' is more emotionally charged than the Mammas & The Papas' version. Johnny Hammond's 'Fantasy' is always smooth, and Sister Sledge's 'Pretty Baby' has Chic written all over it (surprise, surprise, Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards wrote the song). Make sure you save room for Patrice Rushen, Kleer and the mandatory Chaka Khan. This is a very solid collection. Kudos to Jamiroquai for calling attention to some very important music in Funk/R&B history.
