It has been quite a long time since we've heard anything from Anita Baker. The past several years have been a little hard for her with her marriage to Walter ending after nearly 17 years of happiness, and her nearly going to jail because of missed alimony payments. But nevertheless, she has gotten herself back on her feet. It has been nearly 8 years since her beautiful record 2004's My Everything came out, and fans have been so anxious to her Anita swoon again. That is proof with her latest single, a cover of Tyrese's hit Lately. The song is definitely classic Anita and all her own. I loved how Anita delivered on the song. It definitely is up there with her classics. It really is a delight hearing Anita again, especially at a time when artists have sounded more corny and lack of talent in voice. I am really anxious to hear her long-awaited 21st Century Love record when that comes out soon.

"Lately" is uncompromisingly Anita Baker. It has been an astounding 8 years since Baker last graced us with her Grammy-nominated My Everything (2004). Baker was quite popular in her heyday and personally, she brings a different sound to the table compared to other R&B singers and even other adult-contemporary R&B singers. Single "Lately" continues where that jazz-influenced, adult contemporary R&B effort left off. No frills, live-instrumentation, subtle and soulful background vocals, and Mrs. Baker's rich and commanding alto. This is the epitomization of the `grown-folks music' of which Baker has always `had on lock down.'

Though it is hard to criticize a veteran, the sole quibble/argument might be that Baker brings nothing `new' to the table. Once, Mrs. Baker stated she loved/listened to a lot of hip-hop. That could be interpreted to mean that she appreciates modern music and the new breed of artists (if you read into it). If this is her opine, she does not demonstrate any modern trickery or influence from new artists which she listens. All that conjecturing aside, the question is does Baker really need to compromise or change at this point in her career?

The answer is NO. Anita Baker is and always will be Anita Baker and there is no one who possesses her unique vocal timbre nor crosses over with jazz sensibility with such facility. That said, the object of this review "

Seems like Sade's recent long-awaited reemergence got fellow diva Anita Baker's creative juices flowing. Remaking another artist's song after such a lengthy (8 years to be exact) break can be risky, but the direction La Baker has taken Tyrese's late 90's jam Lately is one of pure elegance and class. That wine-dark, jazz-rooted contralto that graced classics like Sweet Love and Body & Soul sounds a bit older, but is as electrifying as ever. I can't get enough of this song and can't wait for Anita's new album Only Forever. A great reminder that there's still music of real soul and substance out there!
