Useless punk music for useless punks.,
By "steve_schett" (San Jose, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Later Days & Better Lays (Audio CD)
If I had to choose only one CD in my collection to listen to for the rest of my life, "Later Days and Better Lays" would be the one. This CD is a staple in my CD carrier. I rarely remove it in case I ever want to listen to it at school or on the road. It's also a great default CD, if you don't know what you want to listen to or if you're bored with your choices, you can always give this one a listen being as solid as it is. You can't go wrong with 21 back-to-back Queers songs with their best line-up (Joe Queer, B-Face, and the late, great Hugh O'Neill). This is not your little brother's pop-punk.For first time Queers listeners you might want to try "Don't Back Down" (more poppy) or "Love Songs for the Retarded" (more aggressive) before buying this album. Both albums have a good mix of Ramones-esque songs. Their music has been described as being a cross between the Beach Boys and the Ramones, 60's style pop harmonies and immature punk lyrics. I have played this CD to one of my strictly metalhead friends and he liked it so much that he eventually went out and got himself a copy. The Queers became one of his favorite bands and we were inspired to eventually start a band because of them. So you can say that this album played a major role in assembling our band. "Later Days and Better Lays" cannot trully be appreciated unless you've heard their other albums on Lookout! Records. Many of the songs can be found on the "Love Songs for the Retarded" album, but don't be discouraged if you already own or plan on buying "Love Songs...". Many of the songs have either: slightly different instrumentals, a different pace, and/or different lyrics. For example if you liked "Granola Head", it rocks even harder on this album with a faster pace and more aggression. If you like the Queers poppier songs don't frett. This CD includes the "BubbleGum Dreams" EP and songs like "Murder in the Brady House", "I Can't Get Over You" (with Joe on lead vocals instead of Lisa Marr) and a handful of others. Most of the songs sound more raw than their original counterparts and many of them include outtakes in between. If you're a fan of the Queers buy this CD or you'll be missing out.

Every song on this album (except "Murder In The Brady House") can be found on other Queers albums, with more polished production -- especially on the re-mastered albums. Before you get this album, buy the others (LOVE SONGS FOR THE RETARDED, BEAT OFF and DON'T BACK DOWN) so you can hear what the "official" versions of the songs sound like. Trust me, you will love them. Then buy this album: you will find that the rawer, slightly-altered versions of the songs on this album are great in and of themselves. Plus, only on this album will you find these fun Queers moments: besides "Murder In The Brady House", you've got "I Can't Stop Farting" with different (and absent) lyrics, an awesome guitar intro to "Too Many Twinkies", a radically-different "Teenage Bonehead" with one of Joe Queer's best guitar solos in the bridge, and "I Can't Get Over You" with Joe doing the main vocals instead of Lisa Marr. Joe said in the liner notes that the sound on this album more accurately represents what the Queers sounded like back then, instead of the more polished, "official" albums.

Akin to a Greatest Hits comp.,

The Queers do it again--bringing excellent pop-punk to the world. This cd is just amazing, and a value buy. It includes outtakes from the Love Songs For The Retarded cd and the whole Bubblegum Dreams EP. Some of my favorite Queers songs are on it (Hi Mom, It's Me, Teenage Bonehead, Feeling Groovy, etc.) This is a great addition to your collection if you're familiar with the Queers. if not, you might want to try Punk Rock Confidential, or their latest offering, Beyond The Valley..
