So Close to Five Stars....,
By Crazy James (Dallas, TX USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Later, Gator (Paperback)
This book was so close to earning my five star ranking, I am still inwardly torn about the deicision I have made to give it four stars. This is a fantastic book, that I would heartily recommend.Teddy lives in a Chinese American family in Chinatown and decides to give his little brother Bobby a pet aligator to help develop his character rather than a pair of socks for his birthday. This purchase, and the incidents that follow make a truly heart warming story about family and growing up in a minority community that is humorous and lesson-filled without becoming very preachy. Laurence Yep proves himself again to be a writer worthy of respect from adults as well as children. Crazy James

A Really Good Book,
By A Customer
This review is from: Later, Gator (Library Binding)
Later, Gator is a really good book, in my opinion. Laurence Yep is a very creative author because he had a lot of well written paragraphs and good ideas. He has written other children's books like Dragonwings and Dragon's Gate. I thought the book was the best I have ever read so far. I recommend this book to you! So if you like books with alligators and creative ideas then Later, Gator is the book for you!

I really enjoyed the book. I was sick with a sore throat and my teacher sent me 10 books. The first one I read was this one. It was soo funny! I especially liked the part when the alligator was thumping around in the box on the bus and everybody moved toward the back of the bus or got off and got onto another. If anybody likes funny books, they should definitely try this one!!!

Awesome, Later, Gator,
A Kid's Review

I would recommend this book to other kids because it is interesting and filled with lots of details about Bobby and Teddy. The whole story was great because Teddy and Bobby stuck beside each other when they needed help.

A Kid's Review

Fantastic, awesome book! This book is funny and gives you information about how Teddy is mean to his younger brother, Bobby. This book is good because it gives you information about all the characters. Some of us like Bobby because he was always perfect, others liked Teddy because he funny and mean. Uncle Curtis was always writing in his notebook and fighting with his brother that always sat on stuff. We recommend this book to others.

OK story, particularly for 3rd - 5th grade boys,
This review is from: Later, Gator (Paperback)
I read this book aloud to my 9-year-old son. It was a decent story with the added dimension of some Chinese American culture, but it wasn't exactly a page-turner. Though it is divided into 21 chapters, the end of one chapter tends to run right into the beginning of the next. There is little feeling of suspense, and I was rarely left eager to know what was going to happen next. Main characters are brothers (I don't remember how old they were supposed to be, but would guess about 11 and 8), and the story is told from the point of view of the older brother. Though this book was not what I'd call a "must read," we enjoyed it enough to stick it out to the end.

I first read this book while I was substituting and I found myself laughing. I am currently reading it to my second/third grade students and they LOVE it a lot! It's a great book to add to the classroom since it has a lot of multicultural aspects that many children need today. I would definitely urge all teachers to add this book to their collection!!! Also see the other 2 books that follow this one. They are great!

Later Gater is a book about a kid named Teddy, who thinks his brothers too nice to people and does not fight like normal brothers do.So,what Teddy wants to do is give him a birthday he'll never forget. His mother told Teddy to get Bobby a nice bithday present this year, because last year he gave his brother socks. Now thats not a very good present. So,Teddys mother gives his mother money to go to the pet store and get him a nice pet for his birthday. So he goes down to the pet store and gets him an aligator. When he gave Bobby the aligator for his birthday,Bobby didn't get scared like Teddy wanted him to be.He actually liked it allot. But her parents didn't want it in the house. But then they finally let him keep it.To find out what happens at the end get this wonderful book,by Laurence Yep.I liked it, I know you'll like it too.
