Editorial Reviews

Product Description

All of his 22 albums have gone gold, platinum, or multi-platinum. He's sold more than 50 million albums, had 36 #1 singles and won a zillion awards. No wonder this collection debuted at #1 on the Billboard Country chart.

Amazon.com

George Strait's first three greatest-hits albums (now made redundant by the four-disc Strait Out of the Box) collected essential examples of contemporary country music. In his finest singles, Strait seemed to resolve, both commercially and artistically, the tensions between hardcore twang and New Country pop. His 2000 best-of set, however, documents Strait's decline. Oh, the radio play has continued unabated--12 of the 15 tracks here made the country Top 10--but emotionally it is a sad and tedious tumble from the Cajun stomp of 1994's "Adalida" and the deliberate self-deceptions of 1996's "I Can Still Make Cheyenne" to pop-rock successes like 1998's catchy but insipid "True." The two new tracks leave the future as anybody's guess: "Murder on Music Row," a duet with Alan Jackson, pledges allegiance to tradition (both in message and execution), but "The Best Day" is devoid of any of the adult ambiguity, previously a Strait staple, that would grant it poignancy. --David Cantwell

And if you own 'Greatest Hits Vol. 2' and/or 'Greatest Hits,' pair it with this, and you have a mighty fine George collection.

This is a must have for any George Strait collection or any fan of good country music or just plain good music in general.

Now that I have your attention, BUY THIS ALBUM NOW! then come back and finish the review. This is an awesome greatest hits package and the two new songs are a great complement. If you are wondering whatever happened to REAL country music listen to "Murder On Music Row" a great duet with the hottest singers in country music George Strait and Alan Jackson with Lee Ann Womack singing on background vocals. The other new track, which starts this compilation off, "The Best Day" is a great nostalgic piece that brings back great memories of times I spent with my dad. The one thing you will notice with this album is that George Strait has a way of making each song his own and and it seems that he has lived every line that he sings, there is no competetion out there for Mr. Strait as far as I'm concerned and I believe that he is the idol for many singers of the future generation of country music. Greatest Hits albums aren't always the cream of the crop of an artist's catalog, but this one really stands out from the pack compared to other greatest hits compilations in the past. This is a must have for any George Strait collection or any fan of good country music or just plain good music in general. Like I said buy this album and you will not be sorry, it will get many rotations in the cd player over the years.

If for no other reason, this is a good CD because of the duet with Alan Jackson called "Murder on Music Row." If you're like me and feel like Nashville systematically snuffed the life out of real country music in the last 10 years, you'll love this song. If you think Shania and Garth are what country music is all about, you won't get the message at all.

This CD contains many of George's Straits recent hits, and the past few years have proven to be among the best of his overall strong career. Two new songs are also included. "The Best Day" is an ode to the family relationship told from a loving son to his father. However, the other new cut is unquestionably the collection's most piquant and potentially polemical. "Murder on Music Row" is a traditional sounding jeremiad that decries much, if not most, of what presently passes as country music. Without naming any names, it is pretty obvious to true country fans who the suggested culprits are. Making this allegation even more powerful, the song is a duet with Alan Jackson-another bona fide country singer-and features background vocals by Lee Ann Womack who has also earned that distinction.
It should be called, "Attempted Murder on Music Row" because as long as George Strait is still making music, country music will be alive and well. Also when rounding up suspects, they should start by checking for Garth Brooks' fingerprints. Next Shania Twain's alibi should be verified and the authorities may also want to investigate the whereabouts of Faith Hill, Tracy Lawrence, the Dixie Chicks, and some of those other caterwauling crooners who have infiltrated Nashville and have gotten their songs to pollute the airwaves of so called "new country" radio stations.
Once those perps are rounded up and the radio starts playing the Branson bunch again, there will no need for songs like that machination anthem that highlights these latest, greatest, and Straitest hits, but George Straits music will always have a welcome place on country radio.

GEORGE IS "PURE COUNTRY" IN MY BOOK. I HAVE BEEN A STRAIT FAN FOR MANY YEARS. THERE ISN'T A SONG OF HIS THAT I DON'T LIKE. HE IS CALM, COOL, AND MOST OF ALL "COUNTRY" ALL THE WAY. I WENT TO A CONCERT OF HIS IN PITTSBURGH AND HE IS AWESOME! ALL HE HAS TO DO IS WALK OUT ON THAT STAGE AND HIS FANS GO NUTS! I LOVE THE MAN AND ALL OF HIS MUSIC, ESPECIALLY THE DUET WITH ALAN, THIS SONG WILL BE THE DUET OF ALL TIME.

Way to go George! How could you pick a more traditional COUNTRY singer than Alan Jackson to help tell garth, and shania, And all the other pop singers To go sing their pop garbage and leave our fiddles and steels alone! Thanks, I'm glad someone finally said what I've been thinking fo years! Thanks for keeping it country Mr. Strait!

This CD Should be a 10 star. 5 stars for 14 of the songs, and 5 stars for "MURDER ON MUSIC ROW"! I'm so glad that someone in Nashville is standing up for REAL country music. This CD is a must buy if your tired of the Nashville elite redefineing country music. I'd like to thank George Strait and Alan Jackson for haveing the courage to record a song with such a strong message against some of the terrible music that is being played on country radio today. And thank you Larry Cordle and Larry Shell for your song writting talants. This one's for the Possum!

Ol' George has done it again. Because all of the old songs have been around, I'll stick to reviewing the two new ones. "The Best Day" is probably not the most commercially flawless tune, but that is what's so great about it. It shows that George is not afraid to say something special with some substance. It's not canned garbage, it tells about something that should mean something to all of us, and that's spending time with those we love. "Murder on Music Row" cracks me up. I never thought George Strait would sing a song that slaps so many people in the face the way this one does. But I love it. He and Alan Jackson are two of the few country artists left, today, and they definitely have every right to defend their ground. I try to write my music in the traditional manner they have defended so long and proud. As a matter of fact, the country scene today looks an awful lot like it did in 1981, Strait's first year in the limelight. Great job, and keep up the great work!
