A proxy friend of the pre-puberty gamer!, August 15, 2008
This review is from: Lathan's Gold (Dungeons & Dragons Module XSOLO) (Paperback)
I wish I had more of these solo modules as a kid: they were the perfect stepping stone during that awkward phase between learning how to play D&D and successfully forging a circle of like-minded geeks to play a real module.
Tired of trying to roll up a character for my six year old brother (he just wanted to play with the eight-sided die), I bought this 'solo' adventure at the local game shop. Actually, it was more like a 'nook' or a 'stand', about the size of a magazine stall, in the local mall. It was run by an archetypally greasy guy with the ponytail and yellow polo shirt, the suitable style of the time. After a long debate about half-racial creatures ("We have half elves and half orcs -- maybe you could be half dwarf? Or half kobold?"
"Yeah," he says, "but you can't be like half-horse. There has to be limits"
'What about centaurs?"
"Those are just a myth."
So, still bewildered by his antropological logic (he was in his twenties -- I was twelve), I picked up this little treat of a game.
What was really cool about this module was that it provided adventures for *all* classes. You pretty much had to use one of their pre-roled templates, and the lame little story attached: Lathan needs to find the mountain spewing gold; the cleric has to find some lost temples; and the fighter has to do something . . . I forget. I hate fighters. So boring.
Anyway, the format is pretty straight forward choose-your-own-adventure: choose A, go to page 89. Choose B, go to page 64. Etc. You pretty much spend the entire adventure just wandering around the local coast, looking for the site that matches your character's objective.
How amazing that such a challenge would occupy more than a few afternoons, without even requiring the services (or social contact) of a DM.
Those were good times.

Solo adventure on the Sea of Dread, May 1, 2000
This review is from: Lathan's Gold (Dungeons & Dragons Module XSOLO) (Paperback)
Return to the Sea of Dread! In this rare and excellent solo adventure, you must rescure your loved one from the clutches of Baron von Hendriks. He demands that you find the mountain of gold, a mysterious, lost volcano that streams burning metal - but of course, savages, sea monsters, and worse will get in your way! This one never plays the same way twice - it's an excellent way to unwind for a few nights. Highly recommended!
