Editorial Reviews

The lush, idyllic landscape of Latin America has long inspired art from outsiders. This release gives the floor over to the less often heard works of insiders: the composers and performers of Latin America. Spanning over 50 years of composition, the project seeks to reveal Latin America's great cultural diversity to novices and devotees alike.

A superb recording of these timeless pieces, played with distinction by the Venezuelan Orchestra under the baton of Theodore Kuchar. The detail is excellent with fine percussive effects, typical of the ensemble nature of Latin American Orchestral and Popular music. Highly Recommended.

You just have to love the music of Latin composers. Who can resist the idiomatic rhythms and enthusiasm so typical of this music? If you enjoy Latin music, you have a treat in this album of Latin American Classics performed by Theodore Kuchar and the Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela on Brilliant Classics.

All of the works performed on the album are interesting. I will comment on those I found to be most notable. The album starts with Huspango by Jose Pablo Moncayo, a stirring piece of typical Latin rhythms, lots of varied percussion, plenty of trumpets, and sweeping melodies played by violins. The well-known Danzón No. 2 by Arturo Marquez that follows is at first a sultry dance before it accelerates to festive proportions and then back again to relaxed and sultry. It oscillates between the two and concludes in an ebullient coda. Aldo Romero’s Tocatta Bachiana y Pajarillo Aldemaroso was inspired by Bach’s Tocatta and Fugue in D minor, and the similarity is noticeable. This is a brilliant work. Just imagine Bach eating tacos. Seriously, this is an imaginative translation of Baroque to the Latin idiom, and I bet you will love it.

Silvestre Revueltas’s Janitzio follows, and I usually enjoy his work. Janitzio, a boisterous work in triple time is more interesting than enjoyable with the exception of a middle section of sublime beauty. Ginastera’s Dances from the Ballet Estancia begin with Las tradbajadores agrícolas which is menacing and agitated. Danza del trigo is like a sunny spring day from dawn to dusk; Los peones de hacienda is a serious movement; finally, Malambo is just over the top festive. Yuri Hung’s Kanaima depicts the rainforest. Oscar Lorenzo Fernandez’s Batuque is an accelerating, agitated piece based on a single melodic motif.

Best recorded version of these Latin American pieces by these famous Latin composers from the 20th century. This album was nominated for the Latin Grammy in 2013 as "Best Instrumental Album". Maestro Theodore Kuchar is among the 100 orchestra conductors of the whole planet. The Orquesta Sinfónica de Venezuela (Venezuelan Symphony Orchestra) is the first and the oldest symphonic orchestra in Latin American and still going, 85 years on stage (2015). This Album is a true jewel.
