Miller's study traces the social history of women in the Caribbean and in Central and South America from the conquest and settlement to the present. Recounting the tales of such exemplary women as Flora Tristan in the 19th century and Magda Portal in the 20th, Miller bases her feminist analysis on new methods and sources for exploring women's history. Her lengthy discussion of 20th-century feminist congresses calling for such reforms as equal pay for equal work and paid maternity leave point out the similarities to women's movements in the United States and Europe. Miller concludes her book with an evalutation of the importance of such recent international forums as the United Nations Decade of Women to the contemporary women's movement in Latin America.
