5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it the first time, and I love it again!
Here is a first-rate Latin program for the non-Latin teacher. Geared toward grades 3-8, lessons are relatively short, easy to teach, and relevent.

Each lesson includes Latin grammar, a Latin saying, Latin vocabulary, English derivitives from the Latin vocabulary, a workbook page to be completed, and should take one week to finish.

The complete set includes a teacher's manual, student workbook, and cd. You may also buy, seperately, DVDs that show a teacher giving each lesson. The DVDs are NOT NECESSARY. I first taught LC about 7 years ago to my two daughters before the DVDs were available and had no problems teaching the course. I recently purchased the DVDs to use with my younger son as we go through LC. They are nice, and the teacher gives good examples and goes at a good pace, but if you don't have the money for them DON'T SWEAT IT. With just a small amount of internal motivation you will do fine without them. Written specifically for home schooling moms with NO Latin background, the teacher's manual is so well written that you will learn as you teach.

The name of the course stems from the fact that there is quite a bit of "church Latin" used. While it may be tempting to think of this as Catholic Latin, much of the "church" content traces back before the Reformation. Hence, it is the heritage of all western Christians, Catholic and Protestant.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pros and cons, May 17, 2006

Am an adult studying Latin for the first time, and bought this set on the recommendation of home-schooling books. It is a very approachable system, and a speedy way to start. However, I was EXTREMELY disappointed in the accompanying CD. The narrator sounds very unnatural and drowsy, and there is not enough time to listen and repeat unless you already know the material inside and out. (I have loved the timing on CDs from language instruction books in the "For Dummies" series, much easier to work with in the car, etc.)

I learned of this product from The Well Trained Mind and was so excited to get it. I was disappointed in it from the get go and ended up returning it.

Every other day when I would pull out the book and CD, my kids would get discouraged. To me the lessons seemed discombobulated. And I also thought it leaned a little too heavy on prayers. I am Christian but don't want my kids spending time memorizing Latin prayers. They really did not enjoy the lesson material or the voice on the CD.

As a parent, I felt like the lessons weren't very well laid out. It was all very confusing.

We are now using the English from the Roots Up flashcards. While my kids won't be able to read Latin documents, they will know Latin and Greek roots to help with their SATs and ACTs and that is what I am concerned about. Also - now I can focus on teaching them a foreign language they can use daily.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Latin program, October 7, 2011

Latina Christiana dvd's are an excellent teaching tool. The teacher explains the lessons very well and the lessons aren't too long. Children can easily follow it and learn. The workbook exercises are a repeat of the lesson which reinforces what was learned from the dvd. I would recommend this especially for anyone who never took a language before.

This is an excellent product! I expected Latin to be very difficult to teach and to learn, but I was wrong. Latina Christiana is a great product to learn Latin with. The instructions and worksheets are easy to use and if I have a problem with pronunciations the cd fills in the gaps. My kids look forward to doing the Latin lessons!
