Book Description

August 30, 2005
“It doesn’t matter whether you’re selling Pampers, blue jeans, cars, or credit cards, the Hispanic community is a market you must include in your business plans.”
–Chiqui Cartagena

It’s the largest demographic group in America–and one with an ever-expanding buying power. Now media pioneer Chiqui Cartagena, an expert on the Hispanic market, has written an indispensable, fact-packed guide that will help anyone trying to successfully reach this crucial community.

The median household income of a Hispanic family is already $4,000 higher than that of an African American family; the disposable income of the Hispanic population is expected to top $1 trillion by 2010; and the average Hispanic citizen is ten years younger than the general market. The business opportunities are endless, but only if you know whom to hire, what to sell, and where to target.

Latino Boom! explains all that and much more, including
• the best ways to approach the three different Latino groups (Isolated, Acculturated, and Assimilated)
• the reasons why “other” Hispanics (those who aren’t Mexican, Puerto Rican, or Cuban) have become an increasingly important sub group
• the increasing influence of consumer-savvy Hispanic teenagers, who play an important role in urban trendsetting
• why Latino consumer behavior makes for a different market than that of the general market or other minority markets
• why companies can succeed wildly or fail miserably in trying to reach this market
• the key differences among America’s top ten cities with the largest Latino populations

Any company will benefit from the authoritative advice in this easy-to-use guide. As Chiqui Cartagena says, “You can spend $20,000 on a consultant, or you can buy this book.”

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Cartagena, a marketing expert on the U.S. Hispanic population, offers an initial understanding of this group, which between 2000 and 2050 will increase to 24.4 percent of the total population, while the non-Hispanic white population will decline to 50.1 percent, and currently it is larger than the African American community. The author uses a standard definition of Latino, meaning people from 22 Latin American countries, and here Hispanic refers more comprehensively to peoples and cultures of Spain and Portugal, both using the Spanish language as their base. There are isolated Hispanics tied to the Spanish language; the fastest growing acculturated group are younger, more educated, bicultural, and bilingual; and the assimilated members of the English mainstream have been here for generations and are proud of their heritage. This book offers companies valuable lessons for strategically selling to Hispanics and also is an important resource for a broader range of library patrons seeking insight into the history and culture of this major group in our society. “Chiqui Cartagena serves as the ideal guide, peppering hard facts with personal anecdotes that truly bring the U.S. Hispanic market to life. Her unbiased, media-agnostic approach to the Latino Boom fully reflects the mosaic of Hispanic identities that make up this market. Bravo, Chiqui!”
–Peter E. Blacker, vice president, multicultural & international, AOL Media Networks

“A book that every marketer in the United States should read. Every multicultural ad agency should give this book as a gift to its clients, and have their own account and media executives in training read it.”
–Manuel E. Machado, CEO/co-chairman, Machado/Garcia-Serra-Publicidad; chairman, Association of Hispanic Advertising Agencies, 2004-05

“I have a very short list of must reads, and Latino Boom! is now the newest and best ‘bible’ on Hispanic marketing. I will gladly recommend the book to all senior management at MTV Networks!”
–Lucia Ballas-Traynor, senior vice president, General Manager, MTV Español & VHUno

“The U.S. Hispanic market has evolved over the last twenty years into the backbone of the mainstream market in the U.S.A. Understanding how the market has grown, its importance, the nuance, and how to effectively reach Hispanic consumers is the foundation for Chiqui Cartagena’s book. Bravo! for helping those interested in the Latino Boom.”
–Eugenio (Gene) Bryan, CEO, HispanicAd.com

“Cartagena has blended data and real-life experience in a very readable, enjoyable manner. The ‘10 mistakes to avoid’ are a great ‘cheat sheet’ and could serve as a quick executive presentation on how to start a Hispanic marketing campaign. What a great tool for organizing my strategy and developing my execution plan.”
–Ed Miller, director, Verizon Communications

This review is from: Latino Boom!: Everything You Need to Know to Grow Your Business in the U.S. Hispanic Market (Hardcover)
The book may be a reference for beginners in the field with no exposure to the community. If you have a minimum background, tou may want to check this work upfront, since4 it may be less specific than what you may be looking for. Having said that, it is not easy to write relevant works in the field, since readers from different industries may have very different expectations.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, January 4, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Latino Boom!: Everything You Need to Know to Grow Your Business in the U.S. Hispanic Market (Hardcover)
As a Hispanic business person looking to hone in on my target market, this book was lousy. It gives little marketing advice and too much emphasis on demographics. If I was confused and disappoint, I can imagine how someone else trying to understand and enter this market must feel after reading this book.
