This is definitely one of Tjader's hottest albums recorded during his "golden era" with the Fantasy Label. It features an all-star cast with Mongo Santamaria, Vince Guaraldi, Rolando Lozano, Eddie Cano, Jose"Chombo"Silva, Willie Bobo, Paul Horn, Al McKibbon, Victor Venegas, Tony Terran, Lonie Hewitt, Eddie Coleman, etc. Experience jazz favorites like "Night In Tunisia", "Cuban Fantasy","Mambo Terrifico","Key Largo","The Continental", etc. One of the Tjader/Fantasy afro-cuban jass timeless classics!

This is undoubtedly a classic! The quintet that cannot be repeated -unfortunately- was at its best, with Mongo and Willie, probably the best combination in latin percussion,at the peak of their form. Any conga/timbales player's GOT TO HAVE this CD...the conga and timbal solos are unsurpassed. It is a "now" sound, recorded in the late fifties! - simply the quintessence of Latin Jazz -with capital letters.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite Latin recordings, May 12, 2011

This is one of my favorite Latin recordings. I have long known about Cal Tjader but only recently took the time to listen to his music. I can't believe I had not heard of this recording before and basically just stumbled upon it. I was blown away with how great it sounded. The sound is incredible for the year it was recorded and the music does not sound dated at all. Really great grooves on this and great musicians too. This is a real gem!

5.0 out of 5 stars Latino-A Cal Tjader Classic!, March 12, 2011
This review is from: Latino (Audio CD)
This is one of my favorite albums because of the outstanding musicianship displayed on all the tunes. The jams are as hot as they get on any Latin Jazz disc due to the fact that Tjader has Mongo Santamaria and Willie Bobo on congas and timbales respectively. In my opinion, there was no better duo as good as these two heavyweights. Listen to "Tumbao" and you'll understand what I mean. The tune begins with the entire group stating the theme, and then Mongo and Willie take off. It begins with a Mambo beat, followed by an Afro-Cuban rhythm, next a Cha-Cha, concluded with a blazing display by the quintet. Great for anyone who wants to learn how to play Latin Percussion the right way.
Other tunes also swing in their own way. For example, José Chombo Silva's tenor sax solo on "Night in Tunisia" will leave you shakin' your head in disbelief at the terrific improvisations he produces. Rolando Lozano is excellent on flute, paticularly on "Mambo Terrifico" and "Manila". Many of Cal's regular sidemen are on this, including Lonnie Hewitt and Al Mckibbon. Of course, Tjader is at his absolute best, and Fantasy has done a great job in preserving the recordings of these classic Tjader tunes. Highly recommended.
