Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Grade 3-5-This book offers an exceptional sampling of Latin American literature ranging from pre-Columbian legends, folktales, poetry, and riddles to biographies and excerpts of work by renowned contemporary authors such as Isabel Allende and Rudolfo Anaya. Perfect for read-alouds, this collection will captivate all audiences as each selection lasts 10 minutes or less. It will also serve as an excellent reference for teachers and librarians during Hispanic Heritage month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15) or when planning any event focusing on Latino culture. The stories themselves are fine, with a nice mix of fiction and nonfiction; they aren't overly involved, so it doesn't take long to get through them. I'm not fluent in Spanish, so I can't comment knowledgeably on the translations, but I can say that overall this is not a well-designed book. There are many typographical errors in the Spanish stories. Examples include words that have an end-of-line syllable break, yet are now positioned in the middle of a line; frequently the inverted punctuation marks that introduce questions and exclamations are not inverted. Some may consider these small points, yet such carelessness leads me to question the reliability of the Spanish text. Someone was asleep at the switch on this book.

It's a great book. The only reservation I have is that the translations from Spanish to English ere not very direct.
