Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up--Cockcroft points out that baseball had roots in Latin America long before Abner Doubleday was given erroneous credit for inventing the game and that the passion for baseball in many countries south of the U.S. border remains fervent. While Latinos who "weren't too black" could be found in limited numbers on major league rosters throughout the early part of the 20th century, they were routinely discriminated against and faced much of the same prejudice that African-American players experienced once baseball's color-line was finally broken. While today, star Hispanic players are found on almost every team, Latinos are still vastly underrepresented in managerial, coaching, front office, and ownership positions. The author documents his writing with nearly 200 endnotes and provides a fairly extensive bibliography. A number of black-and-white photographs are also included. Readers will find some interesting accounts of outstanding baseball players while being served a slice of social history as well.

2.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but Flawed, December 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Latinos in Beisbol (Hispanic Experience in the Americas) (Paperback)
This is not a bad effort at providing a general overview of the subject for young readers, but it is also not a very reliable treatment of the topic for readers seeking thoroughness and historical accuracy. There are plenty of historical errors (for starters, Dolf Luque did not pitch in both the 1918 and 1919 World Series and the Havana Sugar Kings of the International League did not exist for 13 years, but only seven), and there is also more than a reasonable dose of typographical errors. Most distracting from the effort, however, is the author's overlooking in his bibliographical citations of many of the previous important works on the same topic.
