Excellent Folk-Metal,
By
This review is from: Latvian Rifleman (Audio CD)
Metal is different from rock in this sense, that metal can be sung in pretty much any language and be just as enjoyable, if not more so.Latvian Riflemen is a definitive piece of folk metal, it succesfully blends the roots of thrash metal and the rich roots of their cultural heritage. From the beginning the album sounds different from any other Skyforger and for that matter folk metal release. The introduction creates a sort of aura that lets the listener experience walking side b side with the Latvian Riflemen, from there the album only improves. Blending folk medlies and metal riffs in the percisely perfect proportions creates an identifiable yet unique sound. The band sounds different from both Scandinavian bands and different form other bands from the region like Otyg. Overall the album is a perfect mix. Everything is accomplished in the percisely correct proportion and nothing is really overdone or underdone for that matter.

This Skyforger's album is something completely new in metal/pagan metal. Music seems truly pure and filled with emotional playing. Great stuff!!! Folk elements are beautiful, look's like latvians have beautiful folk traditions. They sing in latvian (there is translations inside the cd cover) and I can that this language is very pretty. They sing about historical events during WW I and story I discovered (about Latvian Riflemen) surprised me. Latvian riflemen were great soldiers, they were legendary warriors, freedom fighters and Skyforger's songs tell about these amazing but sad stories. Music is aggresive, but very positive. One of the best things I ever heard! Really and strongly recomended!!!

Greatest stuff ever heard,

This is incredeble, what these guys are doing. "Latvian Rifleman" is real power, which heats up blood. Music you can listen again and again, it never gets boring. On the contrary, it makes desire to listen and listen it. Folk elements rise up ancient instincts and music goes stright to the heart. It's hard to describe album, because when you listen it, it fills you with positive emotions and only thing you can do, is just to enjoy it. Historical point makes this stuff honourable. These guys know, what they are singing about. Latvian riflemen were one of the greatest warriors ever. This album must be in every musical collection! RESPECT to them and to the Skyforger. New release "Thunderforge" is even better.Great, great, great!!!!!!!!!!!!

Incredible stuff,

This is, in my opinion, the best metal album to be published in the last few years. Composition is top notch, with good balance between power and melody and good integration between elements, so nothing seems out of place. Great stuff. I also recommend their first album.

Pagan music,
This review is from: Latvian Rifleman (Audio CD)
This is the first album of this band. I noticed that it was described as "pagan" music. One of the artists claims that "Perkons" (god of thunder) is the sign of the group. The album starts out ok, with a traditional Latvian song. But after that song it's nothing but discord. The lyrics are not sung, but shouted into the mike. If the album had no provided the lyrics, it would have been difficult to understand the singing. I can't say that the music really grabs me. But then being middle aged, may be I don't understand metal. I liked the brochure with the words. However, it was difficult to read the lettering over the photos used. Anyway, at least, I saw some historical photos from the Latvian Riflemen. [My grandfather was a Latvian Rifleman.] |
