The Laubach books are great when working with adults who struggle with reading. They take the student back to the very beginning and fill in the gaps so the student has the tools necessary to decode words. I work in adult literacy, and we have used these books with much success. They may seem a bit juvenile in the beginning, but the students advance quickly and are into more "meaty" books in a short time.
My college-aged friend (for whom I bought this book) used this Laubach Way to Reading Skill Book 1 to help an Arab woman who had never been to school. This woman could not read her own language, nor could she read English. Now, only two months later, she can read and write the entire English alphabet, plus many simple words. She has learned how to sound out words that she does not know. The most amazing thing is her complete change of demeanor. She used to sit with slumped shoulders and think that she was stupid. Now she is brimming with confidence and loves to show people her pages of written homework. I believe that this is only the beginning of what she will learn in years to come. I highly recommend Laubach's simple phonics lessons.
