Book Description

January 1, 2000
"Laughing Eyes" is a collection of letters, family photographs and memorabilia between legendary photographer Edward Weston and his son Cole that provides an intimate glimpse into the lives of the first family of twentieth-century photography - the Westons. Here is a personal account of an artist maturing into his role as one of the great photographers of the century and of a boy growing up through the era of the Great Depression and World War II.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Laughing Eyes" continues on where the "Daybooks" of Edward Weston left off. This intimate and loving communication between father and son sheds light on the life experiences that shaped and directed their respective photographic careers. -- John Sexton, photographer

"This most human and valuable book of letters between Edward Weston and his youngest son Cole...sews together myth and reality so that history might not be without the pins and pricks of emotions felt and the texture of a unique family's history." -- James Enyeart, former director of the George Eastman House

"Weston...held a deep and abiding love for his children...what a treasure these letters (are) and what a wonderful legacy they prove to be." -- Graham Nash, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young

About the Author

Paulette Weston attended two Cole Weston workshops, one in North Carolina in 1986 and a second in Hawaii in 1988. She was invited by Cole to return to Carmel to be his assistant for six months while he printed his first portfolio. Cole and Paulette were married three years later.

In 1998 to celebrate Cole's 79th birthday, Paulette collected 30 years of correspondence between Cole and his father Edward and compiled it into a manuscript. She shared her work with a neighboring photographer. It was here that publisher Barbara March discovered the letters and proposed to Cole and Paulette that Carmel Publishing publish them as a book.

This review is from: Laughing Eyes : A Book of Letters Between Edward and Cole Weston 1923-1946 (Hardcover)
I never thought I would use the word charming to describe much of anything. This book earns that accolade and much more. Being a fan of Edward Weston as well as Cole Weston, I found this book to be the perfect window into both individuals. Paulette Weston has done a wonderful job pulling together this material from, what I am sure, is a vast archive of family information. It is always exciting to read letters from an age devoid of e-mail and telephone communication was still held with some amount of reverance. This book is a joy for fans of the Weston family and I would strongly recommend it, particularly to anyone who has read Edward Weston's Day Books.
