Laughter In The Next Room, Osbert Sitwell [1892-1969]; Little, Brown & Co. (1948)

Harry Melville, "that stylized cosmopolitan," held court in the drawing rooms of Monte Carlo casinos in March 1919 with "his tortuous & trivial monologues."

This was Osbert Sitwell's reminiscent complaint - found in, of all places, LTNR - a memoir of promise completely ruined by Sitwell's own torturous & trivial monologues.

Good luck trying to comprehend what the author is trying to say, on p. 101, which is when I threw in the towel:

"My mother's careless, impulsive nature, her total ignorance of even the most simple fact of arithmetic - perhaps no more due to the life of great riches in which she had been nurtured, than to an almost physical defect, an atrophy (as though in the past too great a strain had been placed upon them), of the very facilities which had enabled Joseph Denison & his son to build up so fabulous a fortune - my father's habit of refusing to see, when using his eyes might be painful or annoying, & his obstinate pride, proved too strong in their combination. (This was the abyss into which his careful persistence in not allowing himself to notice the mountain ash berries had led him.)"*

Getting into & then anything out of reading one of these sentences (yes, the above is ONE sentence - & there others that shamelessly dwarf it) - would be similar to trying to find your way out of the endless systems of deep & flooded trenches on the Western Front on a moonless night in World War I, in which Sitwell served.

Prior to January 28, 2012 (on which date this book was pulped), such badly written (& edited) writing has inspired NOT ONE review on Amazon of any of Sitwell's five memoirs (Left Hand, Right Hand; The Scarlett Tree; Great Morning!
