5.0 out of 5 stars New version of Laundry Service with DVD.
I bought this cd because I really love Shakira and her voice. She is clearly very influenced by not only her Latin roots but her love for rock music especially punk and new wave. She just shows so much talent for her lyric writing and her voice is not your typical one- to me a cross between Grace Jones and Siouxsie. The hits are here with "Whenever,Wherever "...

3.0 out of 5 stars 3/5 stars...I could listen to it!
I got this CD on my birthday...and I enjoyed it! I got a limited edition one, with bonus tracks, and a DVD of some of the Objection (Tango) videos, live, the making of it and the one she preformed on MTV. I really didn't watch the DVD; if you didn't like the music video (or didn't see it), then I recommend buying the regular CD. I could listen to all of the songs except...

The hits are here with "Whenever,Wherever " ,"Underneath Your Clothes" and "Objection (Tango)" the main attraction. But the best songs are the non hits like the Hedwig like ballad "The One" ,"Fool" and "Rules"--- future hits. Dance numbers like "Ready For The Good Times" and "Eyes Like Yours" really show off her clubbier side. You get Spanish versions of "Whenever Wherever" and "Objection" plus new mixes of them too. The Afro Punk Version of "Objection(Tango)" which is similar to the one she performed on the MTV Video Awards really is better than the B-52's influenced original version. The Acoustic version of "Underneath Your Clothes" I think she also performed on Top Of The Pops. Plus the 2nd disc is a DVD of her performance from the MTV Video Awards as well as MTV's Making the Video and full video of "Objection(Tango)" that showcase her sense of humor and beauty very well. The music on here hopefully will show the US what the rest of the Spanish speaking countries already knew: Shakira rocks.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Offer, May 17, 2003

Raine (United States) - See all my reviews
I had wanted Shakira's 'Laundry Service' since it came out, but never got it. But when I saw this offer, cd and dvd for 13 bucks, I new it was time. This is a very solid american debut, and the bonus tracks make it even better. Some of my favorite songs include 'Whenever, Wherever', 'Objection (tango)', and 'Rules'. Shakira will be around for a while (this cd proves it), so if you have not gotten this yet, get this version now. The dvd features are great too! I saw the MTV vma's performance of 'Objection' and am glad to own it now. The music video and making of the music video are great too! There is something for everyone on this, spanish, english, good music, and good tv. I still can't believe it only cost 13 dollars!

If you like this, look up her spanish language albums. They are good too.

5.0 out of 5 stars More than worth it, February 20, 2003
Shakira, along with Marta Sanchez, is one of the most talented Latin singers in years, with a husky voice and a range of different songs. This is "Laundry Service" plus, with a bunch of extra bonuses that make it worth buying all over again. (Or, if you're new to Shakira, buying for the first time)

The first disc is filled with the regular tracks of Shakira's "Laundry Service" album, a mix of pop, rock, ballads, Latin music, a haunting Middle-Eastern-influenced song, and others. But in this version, there are also some extra remixes afterward: The Sahara Mix of "Whenever, Wherever," a Middle-East-influenced remix, with the sinuous music similar to "Eyes Like Yours," and more distant vocals punctuated by great drumming. There is the acoustic mix of "Underneath Your Clothes," a simple remix where Shakira simply sings to the accompaniment of a guitar; the beautiful ballad is made even more poignant. Then "Objection (Tango)" is given a fantastic Afro-Punk remix. This is a song that can be remade a thousand ways, and the remix is even more contagiously danceable than the original.

And then the DVD! This is great stuff, utterly delightful for any Shakira fan. Her appearance at the MTV 2002 Video Music Awards, singing "Objection" in the manner of the Afro-Punk remix, is priceless; she dances, sings, struts along a platform in bare feet and body-surfs over the crowd. Then there is also the music video, equally entertaining as Shakira storms into a bar and confronts her cheating ex, and receives help from two unusual pals. (And the cartoon fantasy sequence is even better) Then there is the behind-the-scenes portion about the making of that music video, a complicated step-by-step special.

Even if you already have "Laundry Service," you may want to get "Washed and Dried." Shakira shows signs of becoming the next Gloria Estefan (intriguingly, Emilio Estefan Jr. is the executive producer), with fantastic CDs that branch out with equally fantastic "extras."

4.0 out of 5 stars Just a Few Things..., July 14, 2003
At Mondera:

There are no "Mexican beats" on this album as she isn't even Mexican, she's Colombian. Nor are there any "Indian" beats as she is half Lebanese (Arab).

Secondly, unlike Britney Spears and company she is not 1) Bubblegum Pop music, 2) she writes her own songs and produced her own album, 3) she actually CAN play instruments. Given that your idea of music is limited to Britney, Justin, N*Sync, and Christina, of course you may not appreciate this album; this is REAL music, not the type of pre-manufactured junk you're used to.

Thirdly, will you all stop with the "how well she speaks English" ... already? Yes, she is Colombian and English is her second language. EVERYONE knows that, so you're not saying anything new. In addition to that, it's not really a compliment, it's patronizing and just shows how little you know about anything that isn't pure-blooded American. Unlike what some people said there is no "salsa" in this and very few songs on this album have "Latin beats". Rock en Español/Rock in Spanish is just that: Rock music that happens to be in Spanish. This isn't "Latin music" per se. Sorry to disappoint you all. Yes, I think i do wish she'd write more songs in Spanish. That way you posers would stop sweating her, comparing her to trashy American Pop stars, raving about how "good her English is", and pretending you know what Latin music is all about. Ciao...

5.0 out of 5 stars Where's Eyes Like Yours??, November 19, 2002
I know that my family and friends hate my ranting and raving but I really wish they had branched out with the DVD section and placed the Latin Grammy performance of Ojos Asi on it. Other than that little complaint I totally love this album. Been a fan forever and it's good to see it being loved in English. The MTV performance is great, a little different but worth it. That's Shakira though, you never know how her live performances are going to go, what she'll do. Buy this, you won't regret it and if you do don't sue me!

4.0 out of 5 stars Go Figure!, December 2, 2002
By A Customer
Ok...I'm surprised. No...I'm AMAZED! The first time I saw this "Shakira" thing, I thought, "great, Brittney meets Charo." Worse, I thought of the awful "into English" translations that destroyed songs like 99 Luftbalon and Der Kommissar...forgive my spelling if it's off...I've spent years trying to forget those songs.

Well, I know nothing! Not only are the songs written intelligently, (in English, anyway)...not only does she actually write the stuff herself AND play guitar...Shakira, ( I can't believe I'm saying this), ROCKS!!! She's got a groove! She's original! It's like...I don't know! A very original sound! OK, she does that Alannis hiccup thing a little too much, and she sometimes lets out these weird "fingernails-on-blackboard" shrieks...but even they're endearing!

Overall, this is a very strong album. The remixes and alternate cuts on the "Washed and Dried" version are terrific too. Great stuff...I want more! I may even take Spanish!

I bought the previous version and loved it, and when I heard of this one, I thought "Why not!" I love the 3 remixes they have added. Especially the remix of Objection Tango. And I like the DVD with the Objection video, the making of Objection, and the live performance!

5.0 out of 5 stars Shakira Who?, March 28, 2003
Okay I must admit I'd never heard of Shakira and was looking for someone new to listen to, something a little upbeat that wasn't going to have swearing every 5 words as sadly seems to be the trend these days, preference for Spanish singer too (thought I don't speak Spanish, just love the music). So I stumbled across this album, thought what the heck and bought it...this became my worst ever shopping experience online but I'll save that for Epinions... The Album though was great, a good mix of pace and music, songs you can sing along to or dance in your living room (as my daughter does, already a fan), the music floats between Mexican beats and even seems to touch on Indian music at times. All in all it was a great random buy and I'll be getting more of Shakira's music. Well suited to all types music listeners.

5.0 out of 5 stars The latin queen does it again!, June 19, 2003
By A Customer
I must say, having a maga hit spainsh album (Donde estan los ladrones?) then making another hit album in english is very amazing. Shes very deicated to her music and is willing to try something new. Which in this case, it really worked! Laundry service is a really good album. And it comes with a DVD with some cool videos of hers. For a Shakira fan, i would recomened this album, it has good remixes and a good DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars SHAKIRA Is INCREDIBLY IRRESISTABLE!, January 5, 2003
By
Hugo (HOUSTON, TEXAS United States) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)
After getting caught up in the mind boggling musical wave and aftermath of Ricky Martin's landmark performance on that Grammys telecast a few seasons back, and eventually feeling so let down by his lackluster repetitive subsequent releases, I wrote off all the up & coming Latin artists because too many of them began to sound like the generic sounds coming out of Nashville/Hollywood. But, SHAKIRA IS INCREDIBLY TALENTED AND AN ORIGINAL and, there is an intense undeniable excitement in SHAKIRA's music! I bought the original version of this cd a year after its release and fell in love with her gorgeous voice, as well as her richly gifted intelligent sense of melodic and prolific writing. I just had to have this stunning updated package as well. SHAKIRA's exceptionally gifted ARTISTRY also possesses one of the most alluring voices that so very few singers are blessed with. To say she sounds like any other artist or combination of, would be too foolish, as she is one of those RARE female VOCALISTS who defy categorizing and she stands humbly tall amongst the best female vocalists of the past & present, easily eclipsing some. I cannot wait to see what she does on her next English cd-album, I am convinced she will out do and surpass herself next time out. Thank GOD my Mom taught me Spanish...music is much more romantically exciting in Espanol! Last time I listened to Latin artists, was too long ago: Silvana Di Lorenzo; Napoleon; Miguel Gallardo;etc. Thank you SHAKIRA for restoring my faith! Highly recommended: SHAKIRA "Grandes Exitos" (Greatest Hits)2002 Cd which leads up to and includes two hit singles from "Laundry Service".
