Wow this is really beginning to piss me off. I see all these different editions of java books by Laura Lemay with tiny little differences. This book is called Java 1.1 Interactive Course but in the middle it mentions that the current version of the jdk is 1.0.2! The only part where it talks about java 1.1 is near the end and thats just a small summary. (Wow its...

They put 1.1 on the cover, but left it out of the book! The book is poorly written and full of mistakes. If you want to learn Java, spend your money on another book.

1.0 out of 5 stars One of the worst computer books I ever bought!, January 18, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Laura Lemay's Java 1.1 Interactive Course (Paperback)
This book is extremely disappointing. The publisher Michael Waite has admitted that the book covers the 1.02 JDK and not the 1.1. He had Lemay do a quick change to the Java 1.02 in 21 days..(basically added a lot of junk filler) to turn out this book. It is poorly organized, full of errors and code that won't compile, the advertised mentors do not exist, confusing, and all in all a waste of money! If you want a good book by a guy that seems to really have it together, try Core Java 1.1 vol 1, 3rd Ed.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money, December 8, 1997

Saw no difference with the one named 'Learn Java in 21 Days' book from the same author. I can email the certificate given to whoever would like to fill his/hers name on the -fill in the blank- certificate.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing!, August 15, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Laura Lemay's Java 1.1 Interactive Course (Paperback)
As a beginner to programming, I found this book
totally inadequate. I might have given a higher rating
if the examples in the book had been accurate.
There are so many proofreading errors and wrong
code that a beginner gets frustrated very easily.

The online site (the "eZone") is also a disappointment.
The pages load slowly; the quizzes and answers
have too many errors; and the limitation of 10
questions for your "mentor" doesn't begin to let
a beginner have the kind of interaction he needs.

Although I haven't found the "perfect" text, I've
been considering Norton & Stanek's PETER NORTON'S
GUIDE TO JAVA PROGRAMMING and Deitel & Deitel's
JAVA: HOW TO PROGRAM, which is a college text.

The author has a perplexing choice of titles,
many of which offer the same material slightly
reorganized or modified. My advice to Ms. Lemay
is to publish fewer books and concentrate on
better proofreading and illustrative exercises.

I would welcome feedback from any other readers
who have had the same problems and who may be
able to recommend that "perfect" text I need!

Skip It!, July 23, 1997

By A Customer
This review is from: Laura Lemay's Java 1.1 Interactive Course (Paperback)

Skip this one, especially if you really want to learn 1.1.

The text is fairly easy to read, but it has not really been updated for 1.1. Also, there are numerous mistakes in the quizzes (and elsewhere).

The only part where it talks about java 1.1 is near the end and thats just a small summary. (Wow its exactly the same as teach yourself java in 21 days with a few new chapters and sessions and chapters instead of days. This is not a very good book for learning java because it contains no exercises. This is like reading a book on math with no exercises! It does try to cover everything about java but it fails to explain it in a clear manner and does not go into detail. Look elsewhere for really learning java but look here if you want some CEUS.

3.0 out of 5 stars Superficial, May 16, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Laura Lemay's Java 1.1 Interactive Course (Paperback)
Although the title of the book is "Java 1.1 Interactive Course" it does not handle Java 1.1 except as supplements, I do not recommend it for people who want to learn 1.1 There are some glaring errors - on p 118 it says that the loop test in a for loop is carried out after each pass of the loop! On page 141 main() does not instantiate the class Car. Some more care in proof reading is called for. The chapters on abstract classes and interfaces are very short, and remain abstract. The form of the quizzes as multiple choice questions isn't very good for learning - small exercises would be much more effective

1.0 out of 5 stars Poorly written, August 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Laura Lemay's Java 1.1 Interactive Course (Paperback)
I was looking through this in a bookstore to see if it would be a good recommendation for a friend wanting to learn java. Save your money. Lemay turns simple concepts into convoluted blather. There are better books with fewer errors.
