5.0 out of 5 stars Melodies that you'll hum for days, September 18, 2007
This review is from: Laura Pursell: Somewhere In This Room (Audio CD)
For the most part, this cd is a relaxing adventure into a world where genres cross. There are elements of jazz and pop, even a great uptempo dance tune or two (It Might As Well Be Magic is really nice). The music is pleasant and the well crafted lyrics create an imagery that provides a unique experience to each and every listener.

When I first heard this cd, Laura's voice immediately reminded me of the late Eva Cassidy. If you like Eva or Karen Carpenter, you'll love her voice and this cd. The music conjured up sounds from composers like Stephen Sondheim. In fact the title song has a sound reminiscent of Sondheim's "Send In The Clowns". Many of the songs have that sort of familiarity to them. That does not detract from the music but actually makes you feel more comfortable with each subsequent play, as if you've known and loved it for years. My favorite song on the CD is a beautiful ballad called "Not Much To Lose". But even picking one song that stands out as the best is difficult. There is so much to enjoy. It's a nice addition to my collection and something I put on when I need to relax or just be contemplative. That's almost daily given the hectic world in which we live.

A lovely CD. Very melodic and evocative. Musically sophisticated and highly textured. Great lyrics. Heartfelt. Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Modern music from another era, September 24, 2007
This review is from: Laura Pursell: Somewhere In This Room (Audio CD)
I love this CD. Several tracks, especially Not Much to Lose, When You Smile and the Finale take me back to my childhood when my parents had wonderful parties and played Getz and Gilberto and drank martinis and everyone was so sophisticated and smoooothe. I hear Ms. Pursell's voice and am transported to a more elegant era, but the music has a decidely modern twist. The gospel-ish I'll Wait allows Ms. Pursell to strut her range, which is at turns silky smooth, gutsy, bluesy and downright beautiful. This CD is a great addition to any collection, and the perfect accompaniment to a cocktail party for ten...or two. A terrific first effort!

This is an extraordinary musical experience. The vocals, the production, the music and lyrics - all wonderful. To say the least it is a remarkable musical journey. Listen to the entire album in one sitting, you will be amazed and transcended into musical bliss.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Discovery!, September 21, 2007

I saw Laura Pursell perform here in California, and it was a great night so I immediately ordered this record when it came out. It was even beyond my expectations! Laura's voice is wonderful, but it's really the melodies that have made this the most played CD in my car right now. The songs stick in your head, but definitely in a "good" way. I've been recommending this record to my friends -- I feel like I've found a wonderful little gem of an album that no one else knows about, but I have a feeling that will change soon.
