Bresnahan Delivers a Solid Interpretation of an Ambitious Plot, May 22, 2009
This review is from: Laura Rider's Masterpiece CD (Audio CD)
Reader Alyssa Bresnahan saves what is a fascinating jab at romance writers and marriage by author Jane Hamilton that builds to a quite uneven ending.
The protagonist is Laura Rider, who uses her husband as the key "tool" in an experiment to create a new style of romance that she can write about; she fixes him up with another woman and then begins taking notes on this game of love. Bresnahan tackles with vigor the realistic dialogue in the novel and captures the joy and intrigue that eventually staggers to incredible heartbreak. Yes, sometimes the puppeteer is actually the puppet.
The plot is incredibly ambitious in Hamilton's sixth novel, but Bresnahan's performance is the glue that pulls everything together on the five CDs that clock in at six hours.
