4.0 out of 5 stars Great music, though there should be more
I saw this movie and ordered the soundtrack the next morning -- it was just such a part of the movie, and I loved the way it mixed different artists and enhanced the film experience. When the CD arrived, however, I was dismayed to see that there are only 14 tracks on it. 'Shade and Honey' is still on the disc, earlier in the listing (I think it's at #3), but Serge...

3.0 out of 5 stars Yeah, where's "Bonnie and Clyde"?
I agree with a previous reviewer who said that Serge Gainsbourg's "Bonnie and Clyde" (with Brigitte Bardot) ought to definitely be on this CD.

I don't recall Eartha Kitt's track being in the movie.

Great soundtrack, but I won't get it.

(I just watched the movie -- I was really taken by that Gainsbourg thing.)

When the CD arrived, however, I was dismayed to see that there are only 14 tracks on it. 'Shade and Honey' is still on the disc, earlier in the listing (I think it's at #3), but Serge Gainsbourg is nowhere on it. Since his 'Bonnie and Clyde' was a big reason I bought the CD, I was a little miffed about it. But the music that's actually on the CD is great. I just wish I'd known what was actually on the CD before I bought it.

4.0 out of 5 stars One song worth the price, July 21, 2003

I rented the DVD over the weekend and was blown away by the Mercury Rev song that started as the jet was landing in LA.
I bought the DVD and the soundtrack and probably listened to "In A Funny Way" 20x or more. What a great sound.
It makes me want to chuck it all and move to Laurel Canyon.
There's some other songs from the 70's and the new stuff that the "group" in the movie performed.
A great CD for the car...or when you're feeling disconnected from it all.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wow; what a mix!, June 22, 2004
This review is from: Laurel Canyon (Audio CD)
I got the Laurel Canyon Soundtrack and sort of put it aside and never listened to it, just being content having a part of the movie that I adore. Recently, however, I took it out of its case, brought it out to my little car, put it in the CD player, and listened to it on my way to work.

Boy, I was glad that I did.

The weather here has just turned to summer. With my windows rolled down, I turned up the music, and it really felt like summer. I'm not saying that if you buy this CD, you will embody the spirit of summer. Rather, it's a great CD to play during the season (and out of, too).

The music reminds me of, namely, Laurel Canyon the movie - a place that is eternally steamily warm and beautiful. Moreover, you can definitely tell that the music is from an arthouse, independent film, ranging from pop, to psychadelic, to fictitous, to French, to mellow. Definitely an original mix. You will be surprised by each and every song on the disc.

I definitely recommend if you enjoyed the film.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Laurel Canyon Soundtrack Is Superb, March 5, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Laurel Canyon (Audio CD)
It is difficult for me to appreciate a lot of modern rock music. The bands as they appear on Saturday Night Live or The David Letterman Show all look and sound the same. They look like the kids down the street playing in the garage.

We rented the movie Laurel Canyon recently and I was immediately struck by the music. The opening tune by Mercury Rev (In A Funny Way) is as good as anything I've heard recently. The Butthole Surfers song (Good Time)is an edgy gem. Scapegoat Wax (Crawling)adds even more atmosphere.

Also included were seventies goodies by T-Rex (Planet Queen), Steely Dan (Do It Again) and Lee Michaels (Do You Know What I Mean). Even an Eartha Kitt song is thrown in for good measure!

All the ingredients work here. If you saw the movie I think you'll agree. This is by far one of the better soundtracks to come out in some time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delivers through to the end!, August 23, 2004
This review is from: Laurel Canyon (Audio CD)
This is the first CD I have bought in a long time that was actually devoid of "filler material".

Granted, you really need to see the movie to get the whole experience, but this CD would work well enough on its own.

I challenge anyone to listen to Mercury Rev's "In a funny way" and not be singing it to themselves for days.

From this spellbing beginning, through the Butthole's "the Shame of life", right on through the final track, this CD sets a mood, or should I say tone (or both). It just goes to show that quality music exists within a myriad of genres.

Buy it, live it, love it.

4.0 out of 5 stars misrepresentation, May 6, 2003

I ordered this CD strictly because of the track listing I saw here. Unfortunately, it is not accurate. Several of the tracks you see here are not on the actual CD. While the CD that arrived is good, I could've bought it and had it on the day I wanted it instead of waiting for it to ship. So be warned.

hmm....i don't usually write these. Especially for having sampled the music at Virgin Megastore. however, the compilation sincerely brings together the beauty and insanity that many artists grapple with here in Los Angeles. the "vibe" this album suggests is dead on with the theme of the movie and for what it's worth, i just got back from it and i couldn't stop smiling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Combo of Past and Present Music, November 20, 2005
This review is from: Laurel Canyon (Audio CD)
Laurel Canyon is an excellent movie enhanced by a wonderful soundtrack. The soundtrack is an excellent combination of past and present music enabling the listener to re-live the strong emotions generated by the movie. Even if you haven't seen the movie you will find yourself singing along to many of the tracks. Great fun !
