Very good quality transfers & good service, April 16, 2010
This review is from: Laurel and Hardy Classic Shorts (Volume 2) (DVD)
These DVD's of classic L & H shorts are very worthwhile. The transfers to video are well done, and for the most part the source material is in very good shape, considering the age of the films and the sometimes haphazard care they have received over the years.
All of these shorts now sport their original Roach/MGM title cards and credits, some of which have not been seen in many years. The audio is fine on all four shorts. BRATS is a very good print and appears to have the original 1930 music track, not the one from the 1937 reissue. TOWED IN A HOLE is also in beautiful shape and a pleasure to watch.
HOG WILD, my personal favorite, is unfortunately in the worst condition of the bunch. This short gets a "B-" from me for video quality, because it's a scratched print that appears to be several generations removed from the original. There are also a few jitters and jumps probably caused by torn sproket holes and/or splices. BLOTTO is in better shape but also a bit soft and fuzzy. However, this may be the best they will ever look at this point.
But ALL of these films are still wonderful to watch, and I have paid a lot more money fot a lot worse product. At $30 for four shorts, this DVD is a real bargain, don't pass it up!
The service from Dana was also good -- very fast and sent by 1st Class Mail to boot, not 4th Class Media Mail. SETH

Classic Ollie and Laurel Shorts, January 31, 2011
This review is from: Laurel and Hardy Classic Shorts (Volume 2) (DVD)
The shorts that Laurel and Hardy created are among the funniest of their time and they certainly stand the test of time. This DVD series contains 4 classic shorts and is produced using a non-commercial DVD-burner (evident in the blue writing surface) rather than the "pressed" type that you typically see with a shiny silver surface. Nonetheless, the quality is very good and it is exactly what I was looking for. The price is a bit more than I am happy to pay but it is the only thing available that I am aware of. I plan on collecting the whole set which will set me back about $400.

Laurel and Hardy, February 3, 2010
This review is from: Laurel and Hardy Classic Shorts (Volume 2) (DVD)
The transfere was pretty good. It looks like the shorts are complete. Hog Wild was one of their better shorts so it is worth the price just for that. It is difficut to get laurel and Hardy's best works from the 1930's. I don't know why more has not been released. Their movies from the 40's have been released but they are not as funny ans the ones from the 1930's
