5.0 out of 5 stars A super-slapstick Laurel and Hardy short, September 16, 2001
By
This review is from: Laurel & Hardy:Hog Wild [VHS] (VHS Tape)
If like slapstick humor...this is the one for YOU. Even if you're someone who has never seen Stan Laurel & Oliver Hardy, Hog Wild will be one of your favorites due to the increasing number of great slapstick gags as the short undwinds. I enjoy showing this to young people who've never seen "the boys" before. They always become HUGE fans.

The plot? Basically, Oliver has been ordered by his angry wife to put up their radio aerial (this was shot in 1929 waaaaay before cable or t.v.). Stan comes over to "help" -- sending Hardy sliding down the roof, sending a roasting Hardy running for water with his pants on fire, sending Hardy tumbling down the soot-filled chimney, and in the end leaving Hardy stuck atop a ladder hitched to his swerving, speeding car.

Some notable things about this video: This was the first Laurel & Hardy sound short to have Roach's zippy background music. In the opening part, where Oliver can't find his hat, it contains Hardy's famous knowing glance to the audience -- followed by one from his wife! It's heavier in quick-paced slapstick gags than many Laurel and Hardy films. And it's beautifully colorized so it vividly takes you back to L.A. in the 30s. It's truly a shame that -- for now, at least -- this and most other L&H shorts have been discontinued. The high ratio of slapstick laughs in this one will be especially enjoyed by Three Stooges fans...but "the boys" did it with a bit more grace!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of L&H`s best short films, January 9, 2010
This review is from: Laurel & Hardy:Hog Wild [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Ollie has plans to spend the day with his buddy Stan, but his wife has other ideas. She wants him to put up a radio antenna and
isn`t taking no for an anwser. Now having Ollie up on a roof is a dangerous idea all by itself, but with Stan to help....well
that can only be discribed as looming disaster.
