Identifying with the people,
This review is from: Laurel St Demos (Audio CD)
I got into Tim Barry after AVAIL and, to be honest, I prefer his solo stuff to AVAIL. This is my favorite Tim Barry album. I enjoyed the simplicity of his songs. He is a true story teller in his songs. It is filled with emotion and lyrically it is so simple that you don't have to think and can just enjoy the music. I want to call it a blue collar working man's album but I think it would even be better to identify it as the common person's album. The guitars and harmonica offer a little variety through each song so it does not sound the same all the way through. All of the songs are good but I enjoy the song "Church of Level Track" because I feel as if I can visualize some of the story that goes with this song.

When I first heard "Idle Idylist" I felt stupid with awe. Here was one of my favorite artists reaching into my own psyche and singing things I thought only I was thinking about!
Tim Barry is a talent that is not getting the credit or the recognition he deserves, though it's been that way for years. With a wellspring of emotion and talent Tim Barry will be recording and performing for many years to come and the ground swell of support will grow with him. Each show I attend has a larger crowd and more and more people are talking about his new solo efforts. Tim is a new solo talent to watch. If you enjoy this record you may want to check out his earlier records with the band Avail. Same voice, same honesty, more aggression.

Tim Barry's Laurel St. Demos are an intense collection of songs written by a man who cares about his surrounding people and places. This record is a gem among demos, because it tells a story of what's to come. His follow up (First record) Rivanna junction is unbeleivably amazing as well. Support Non-Major label artists, because they might actually show up to play in your podunk lil' town!!!
