5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Early Work of One of Today's Hottest Producers, June 9, 2003
By A Customer
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I remember this album ten years ago. I had heard a few songs on it, which I liked, but never got around to buying it. Fast forward to today, and suddenly I'm reading a lot about Lauren Christy because she is one-third of the songwriting/producing team known as the Matrix, who wrote all the hits for Avril Lavigne's album. Suddenly, they're the hottest hit makers in the business, with Britney Spears, Rickey Martin, Mariah Carey, and Liz Phair among the singers wanting to work with them. So I finally bought this album, and it's gorgeous. I've been listening to it over and over. On top of that, I love how Lauren Christy has transformed herself into a mega-producer, after not becoming a big success as a solo singer. You go, girl.

5.0 out of 5 stars Underrated Doesn't Do Justice To Christy's Smooth FM Debut, November 13, 2000
Chances are you may not have heard of Lauren Christy. I know I hadn't. I'd heard "Steep" many times over the years but could never pin down the singer until someone told me who it was. I'm glad I was able to find out, as "Steep" soars over its loving piano/keyboard track and captivates the listener. This vocal quality is on display throughout the tracks of Ms. Christy's debut long-player.

Besides being beautiful in a smoldering way, Christy displays a trait in her singing one wishes other divas would follow - she possesses a fine balance of brawn, sass, tenderness, heart, and level-headedness. If she chose to, she could cover songs by Chad & Jeremy, The Dave Clark Five, etc. and do them justice.

After Rain kicks things off on the right track, You Read Me Wrong enters - it is a song that many will perhaps bear a familiarity with as it has received considerable airplay over the years. Steep then goes and segues to The Rumor - the title's British spelling gives away her nationality - and the River of Time.

Vanessa's Father is probably the weirdest of the set - I think I "get" the meaning of this story of a young girl involved with the titular father, but I'm not quite sure.

My Jeans I Want Them Back is the most rocking number with its cute thrill title and is perhaps the album's highlight, though it closes out nicely down to Take Me To The Church. And with the album's close, this foray into the smoothest of Smooth FM music leaves the listerner wanting more of Lauren Christy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deeply moving, passionate, and overall incredible cd!, August 10, 2007
I bought this cd in 1993 after reading a Kate Bush comparison or influence. There is a touch of that in the classiness of their vocals, but Lauren's cd is more straight forward, yet uniquely touching pop music. The word "class" just keeps coming to mind, and sweet melancholy. The songs and writing are excellent. I have over 1300 cd's and this one is in my top 15 or higher. It moves me in a way similar to Sarah McLachlan's Fumbling Towards Ecstacy cd. Anyways I give this cd my absolute highest recommendation. I was very disappointed with her follow up cd, Breed, where she totally changed styles. An artist certainly has the right to do so, but I have the right to express my sorrow as I was hoping for a follow up in a similar vein of this cd. Hopefully one day she'll do another like this cd. (Please, Lauren?)
