Book Description

May 23, 2000

Baseball is back! And the focus of many fans is almost always on hitting. All of which makes it a great time forLau's Laws on Hitting. The Art of Hitting .300 (Dutton) by Charley Lau and Alfred Glossbrenner was published in 1980. It is still in print and, as of early 1999, has sold over 85,000 copies. Lau's Laws on Hitting will both build on that success and pick up where the earlier title left off.

Written by a man who is not only the son of the most famous batting coach of all time, but who is also a professional hitting instructor with an impressive track record of his own, this book incorporates two decades of new information, observations, teaching techniques, player analysis, and refinements to the Lau System. And, in response to numerous reader requests, it includes sections specifically designed to help coaches at all levels teach the Lau System most effectively.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The takeoff point in Mark McGwire's rise from inconsistent slugger to burgeoning legend occurred when he adopted Charley Lau's one-handed extension principle. (The Sporting News )

Filled with outstanding tips to make yourself a better hitter whether you are playing baseball or fast pitched softball. Lau gives you a good look at the right (and wrong) way to swing the bat.

About the Author

Charley Lau, Jr. - A sports adminstration graduate of St. Thomas University, Charley Lau Jr. spent three years as a minor league hitting instructor in the Chicago White Sox organization before returning home to Miami and using South Florida youth leaguers to further validate his hitting development program.

He divides his time between operating Charley Lau's School of Hitting in Hollywood, Florida, and serving as the personal hitting instructor for numerous big-league players. Always well respected, Charley Jr.'s reputation as a special batting coach grew rapidly after a skinny kid named Alex Rodriguez used his system to not only catapult himself out of the minors, but to also win a major-league batting title.

Charley Jr. has worked with such players as Tony Gwynn, Dante Bichette, and several other high-profile hitters.

Jeffrey Flanagan- Jeffrey Flanagan has worked the last 10 years at the Kansas City Star as a columnist, national baseball writer, and a beat writer covering the Kansas City Royals. Prior to that, he worked as the national baseball writer for the Arizona Republic in Phoenix. He has also worked at the Decatur (Ill.) Herald and Review, and the Portsmouth (New Hampshire) Herald. Flanagan is a graduate of the University of Minnesota with degrees in political science and journalism. He hits and throws right-handed and currently resides in Westwood, Kansas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thanks, For saving the hitting Industry, July 5, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Lau's Laws on Hitting: The Art of Hitting .400 for the Next Generation; Follow Lau's Laws and Improve Your Hitting! (Paperback)
Lau's Laws On Hitting is the first book in twenty years to finally give you the truth on what it takes to build the most dynamic swing. All I've seen out there in the past are recycled and generic jargon. Charley Jr., clearly has taken his fathers' already legendary aspects on hitting to the highest of heights. Lau junior dispels the myths and shows you step by step how to build your swing and he also warns you on how much bad and incorrect information is out there. The apple has definately not fallen to far from the tree.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lau, jr. Fills in the Gaps, July 21, 2001
By
Dave DiDonato (Indian Valley High School, Gnadenhutten, OH) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lau's Laws on Hitting: The Art of Hitting .400 for the Next Generation; Follow Lau's Laws and Improve Your Hitting! (Paperback)
I have been a high school baseball coach for the last 15 years. In the early 90's, I tried to use Lau, sr.'s mechanics, but I didn't fully understand the "why" of Lau, sr. Charley Lau, jr. "filled in the gaps" for me. When I first read Lau, jr.'s theories on hitting a baseball with backspin vs. topspin, I thought that there would be no way that high school kids could be taught this. He proved me wrong. Employing his drills to the max to accomplish this, my team last season went from hitting 0 home runs and .280 in a summer league to 35 home runs and .350 during the spring season (2001) smashing our way to the regional finals. We actually had to get away from intrasquad scrimmages because our infielders were not getting enough work. Our hitters were constantly driving the ball to the outfield either over the fence or in the gaps as Lau, jr. claims you will do in his book. Our players and I swear by the techniques Lau, jr. stresses in this book. It is by far the best book on hitting that I have ever read and that includes The Art of Hitting by Ted Williams.

5.0 out of 5 stars To Charlie Lau you must listen, May 23, 2007
This review is from: Lau's Laws on Hitting: The Art of Hitting .400 for the Next Generation; Follow Lau's Laws and Improve Your Hitting! (Paperback)
Charlie Lau, Jr. takes up whether his famous father left. His instructions are great, as are most of the illustrations and photos. The book gives you a very good guide as to the types of swings you should have to be successful in hitting. I would not calls his techniques "Lau's laws" because by nature, the choices and styles of most people vary, if only slightly. However, the regimen outlined in the book is excellent and a must read for every serious coach and student of the game. He needs to mention that baseball, though mental enough, involves many nuances which we cannot control. I don't believe any one person revolutionized baseball more than the VCR did years ago. Highly recommend this book!!
