Truly Genius,
By John T. (Illinois) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lava Land (Audio CD)
I first heard about this band from the buzz around school, as Ezra, the bassist, just graduated from my highschool last year. I listened to one track ( Caramel) and I was hooked. I absolutely hate the direction music is going, and this is definately a well needed step in the right direction. The transitions, and time changes are extremely smooth, and the composition is truly amazing.

As you can tell, I pretty much like this product. The First Track "Bugstomp" was a good choice to begin with starting off slow then entering a world in which your mind can't comprehend. My favorite track had to be "Anthropology, Anthology". What makes this album unique is that it combines easy-going math-rock with jazz here and there. This is a definite buy for anyone who likes math-rock or something new. Now if only they would of released the unreleased tracks on a CD.

Piglet rocks my booty,

This album is what would happen if Don Caballero had a sense of humor. Who knew complicated song structures and abrupt time changes could be so damn funny? Not a sombre drone to be heard here, nor a long build-up to a roaring crescendo. Just a guitar, bass, and drums with chops out the wazoo.
This type of music generally hinges on tight drumming and that's abundantly true for Piglet. If you want to know what Lava Land sounds like, look at the cover. That's what it sounds like. For people who like this sort of thing, it's the sort of thing they'll like a lot.

Very good,

I wouldn't call it math rock... I probably wouldn't even call it rock. This is just good music done right. The mood throughout is very consistent, so it is easy to listen to on repeat (when driving or like another reviewer said, studying). Each track has something new to pick out and enjoy with each listen. This was an impulse buy for me, and it was well worth it.

A great instrumental,

These guys have tapped onto a math-rock instrumental theme that has simply amazed me. This is a perfect cd for studying, driving, or just listening to. Varient enough to keep you interested and quite catchy. This is one of my favorite albums I have purchased in a long time.

Rad but Short,

If you would close your eyes upon popping this cd into your record player, you would think it was some crazy offspring of el ten eleven meets don cab . which by the way is RAD. the drumming is tight to the point of being something all drummers should inspire to reach in technical and creative skill. and if anyone here, likes those sweet minus the bear parts where the singer shuts his mouth for a second , and lets the music kill it thats pretty much what every song on here is like. thank god for the lack of a singer . the guitars are a different story in itself , if jazz was this good I might dress up in a suit and pretend that i was high and mighty just to enjoy it. really the only problem is the cd is short and now apparently really high priced.
