It's not exactly easy to tell the various lava lamp suppliers apart--they all claim to be "the" only authentic high-quality purveyor out there--but Amazon should move on from whoever is selling them their lava lamps at the moment. I'm looking at my second consecutive opaque red lava lamp as I type this. There's almost certainly some wax melting in there, but it's not as though I can see it.

Lava lamps being cloudy right out of the box is an either/or thing, so if you get lucky and the "clear" liquid is even remotely clear, I'm sure it's a fine lamp. But the odds aren't great, as you can tell if you look for the word "cloudy" in these other reviews.

i got it and i couldnt see through the liquid it had a weird smoke like look and i thought it was just shaken up and needed to settle but its been 2 weeks now and its still murky and you can barely see the lava when it flows and its black lava i am very disappointed in this product i do not recommended other users to buy this from this seller

I had bought another lava lamp from Amazon, and this one seemed like a wonderful addition......sadly there are just two blobs of wax on at the top and one at the bottom sitting there. This was a waste of money alright.

I ordered one black/clear and one orange/clear Lava Lite. The liquid was foggy, almost milky. I tried running them to see if that would solve the problem and it didn't so off they went back to Amazon for replacement. The replacements were also foggy. I called Lava Lite and was told that if the weather is hot when the lamp is in transit, the temperature inside the truck can be much hotter and the wax can melt. If it does, and the truck shakes the bottle, the ingredients get mixed, causing a cloudy lamp. The problem is worse in lamps with clear liquid. They suggested that I wait until late September or October to order.

Lamp works great and looks like everything a lava lamp should look like. There is only one bad thing about this and that is that the liquid is not clear at all. It's not clear/red it's red/red. I probably would have bought a different one if I had known but it's still a cool lamp.

Do you see the title of this review? That's all you need to know. If you look at other reviews for other lava lamps, you will see the same issue spring up time and time again. The liquid is cloudy. Let me repeat that in the event you didn't get it the first time....CLOUDY! Nothing will mess up your trip down memory lane or your new found psychedelic moment worse than a cloudy lava lamp. Now, a lot of people are blaming Amazon. This is not Amazon's fault. Allow the lava lamp mistress to explain the problem. The manufacturer, Lava Lite, decided a few years ago to let China manufacture their lava lamps. China changed the formula of the goo and the liquid. If you stand one of the newer lamps next to a vintage one, the differences are quite clear. The Goo in the China lamp will be almost transparent and very oily looking, and the liquid will not be clear. Because of this, i have not purchased a new lava lamp in over a decade, but the rumor mill was saying that Lava Lite revamped their formulas at the end of '09...so I took a chance and bought this one thinking it would be good. No such luck. Right out of the box, it looked like pink gravy floating in milk. Not a good look. This one is going back. On the bright side, however, a very good source put the bug in my ear that Lava Lite will be releasing a crop of new and exciting lava lamps that actually work around the third quarter of 2011. I am looking forward to it. Until then, no more lava lamps for me. You might want to hold off too.

My first grader wanted a lava lamp for a nightlight, and picked this particular model for its colors. He's very happy with it, and I've got to admit it can be hypnotic to watch. There's not much to a lava lamp, but this one is nicely made and it does what you want a lava lamp to do.

After reading the reviews, I was a bit nervous about ordering this as a gift...so instead of having the item shipped directly to the recipient, I had it sent to me so that I could check it out first.

Big waste of time/energy: the item arrived, was assembled, plugged in and did exactly what it was supposed to do (attractively, too).

I'm not sure what the unhappy customers are expecting here, but maybe they're disappointed because the reality of the item doesn't match their memory of what the item "should be".

I WAS VERY DISSAPOINTED.

I purchased this lamp as a present for a friend. The lamp arrived in a timely manner, but after that, things went downhill. It took several tries over a period of multiple days to get the lava to function as it should (ie, not lay stuck in one large clump at the bottom of the lamp). Also, the solution the lava is in is very cloudy which means it's not very nice to look at. However, the customer service department at LAMPS PLUS is very friendly and really helpful.
