This was the perfect nightlight for our little girl. The light isn't too bright, and sparkles created by the glitter aren't overly distracting at night either. Exactly what we were looking for. The first bulb lasted about 6 months, but it was very inexpensive to replace. I'd recommend. It does get a little hot, but not as hot as a typical lava lamp though.

When you hear the term "lava lamp" you might think of a pink goo floating in a colored liquid, and you might hear strains of 70's music in your head, but I'd like to assure you that this is not the tacky lava lamps of old.

The exterior of this lamp has a brushed silver finish, the liquid is clear, and the glitter inside is silver. The 25W light bulb in its base is also clear, so there are no way-out colors to be found.

The reason that I wanted to purchase this lamp was that I saw one a few years ago, and I really liked how slowly the glitter would move in the lamp. The heat from the bulb in the base creates a convection current in the liquid that sends it up the middle of the lamp until it reaches the top, cools, and descends around the perimeter. This creates something similar to a snow globe that is much slower in its motion.

If I had one complaint, it's that the light is very bright. In a darkened room, you could read by this lamp if you had it next to you, which means that it is almost too bright for my taste.

This brightness and the fact that the lamp does get quite warm to the touch means that I would not use it as a nightlight in a child's room. If this is your intent, please reconsider doing so. It's not safe for a small child, and it's too bright for nightlight purposes anyway. I'm a stickler for not leaving things running, so even older children would have to be reminded to make sure to turn it off like they would a candle when they leave the room for a long period of time.

Aside from those caveats, this is a great accessory! It's exactly what I wanted, and I'm very pleased with the packaging and the end product.

I bought two of these lava lamps for a 70's themed party. They really added a lot of sparkle for the buffet table!
