Much like the other reviewers, i bought this on an ebay deal when Amazon was out and i wanted it NOW. well, that one arrived not in working order and not packaged at all for mail shipment. when these came back in stock at Amazon, i thought it worth what i consider a low price for a plasma entertainment device, so i took another risk. this one, which i received in April 2010 came in the usual Amazon professional shipping packaging, works great and i am stoked! actually thinking of getting another one.

The lamp arrived in working order, but there was an odor (a gas-like smell) coming from the bottom of the device. In less than a week it stopped working. I would avoid.

I dragged my old Lava Lamp (classic) from storage, asking my 14 year old if he would like it in his room.

Of course he did! Then we were just browsing around amazon to see what other colors of lava/liquid they had, and he spotted this.

the cash was in my hand in 10 minutes and he loves it, especially the fact that it reacts to sound, so it pulses along with any music he is playing...

He adores it. Worth the $20 something.

The good news is that when this thing is working, it looks cool. The plasma streams look unexpectedly good in the lava-lamp shape.

The bad news is that the quality control on these lamps seems to be as bad as that plaguing the Xbox 360.

The first two I received were DOA -- no light at either of the two settings ("constant on" or "sound responsive").

The manufacturer replaced the second one (which I bought from another vendor), and it worked well for about two weeks.

Now, even at the "constant on" setting, it won't stay on. If you give it a shake, it will come back on -- for minutes or seconds.

In addition, when the unit did work, the "sound responsive" setting wasn't very sensitive. You REALLY had to blast some music for the lamp to respond properly -- loud enough to bother your neighbors.

So, as much as I like the idea of a sound-responsive plasma lava lamp, I have to say that the execution leaves MUCH to be desired. NOT recommended!

UPDATE: I managed to get a replacement lamp under warranty. So far this one has been working... That makes one out of four that worked for more than two weeks! The vendor claimed that he had gotten very few customer complaints, but acknowledged that maybe my problems were the result of a "bad batch". All I can say is -- this "bad batch" has been around since I got the first DOA unit from Amazon over the holidays. Caveat emptor!

SECOND UPDATE: Although my fourth lamp continues to work, its performance has deteriorated. The pink/purple plasma strands are visible, but the "white lightning" strands have disappeared. I decided to give up on this turkey and have replaced it with the conical Lumisource Electra lamp with a colored neon rod in the center. This unit worked properly out of the box and appears to be made of high-quality components (good switch, thick power cord, no bulky external power supply). We'll see how it holds up...

I ordered one of these for my daughter. It was dead on arrival; did not turn on. Nothing.

We returned it to Amazon for a replacement, and that replacement light was also dead on arrival.

My daughter was so bummed we decided to get something else third time around.

When we opened the box and plugged in the lamp it didn't work, and it also started to smoke and smelled like ecectric burn. Also, there was not enough of a discription on the product page. When we looked at the instructions it said you can't put it by a Computer, no glass top, and not near a Sterio. If we knew that we would of never ordered this lamp

This was very dissapointing as it was part of my grandson's birthday gift.
I returned the lamp with no problem. I did by a traditional Lava Lamp and so far no problems.

So this is my first time buying one of these. I always thought they were cool. so I order one to replace my old broken lava lamp. I pay the extra $4 for one day shipping and I get it. broken. the lamp wouldn't turn on. no matter what plug I used. the fact is that it was shipped to me broken. my review is that this product should not be ordered unless there cn be assurance that the product actually works.

Just Like just everyone else, the produce that arrived was not functioning. I am in the process of contacting seller for a full refund and not a replacement. Read all the reviews before purchasing. Its not worth the time and money.

I wished I would have read the product reviews prior to my purchase. The lamp did work when it arrived, but 3 days later it died. Using a different outlet, moving to a different location, etc. does not help. This was a total waste of money.

Purchased this from my iPhone and didn't bother reading all the other reviews. Now that I'm online to request a return, I see that many have had the same problem. Did not work on arrival. Think I'll do a straight-up return and won't bother with the exchange!
