At 27" tall, this is one huge Lava lamp... and that's its appeal. They're great in an entertainment room - the slow, smooth lava flow in one of these big lamps is nicely relaxing, and their soft blue-green glow allows you to see your surroundings without distracting from what's on the screen.

1.0 out of 5 stars THIS LAVA LIGHT IS JUNK!!!!!
We got this lava light for our son's birthday. When it arrived it was so cloudy we couldn't even see the lava inside and the color we purchased was BLACK and CLEAR. There was a wire inside near the bottom that came up and wrapped over the side of the glass, we are assuming that once it turns on the wire will sink down and it will be ok. Right away looking at the lamp...

I love the things... but be aware that they take a while to warm up. The lava can take two or three hours to get fully flowing in these big lamps. Also, it takes several thermal cycles for a new lamp to really get flowing. The first time I turned them on one of my lamps still hadn't bubbled after six hours. I turned it off, let it cool down completely (3+ hours), and turned it on again; within a few hours it was working properly and flows nicely now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two step start up..., September 19, 2008

Okay, at this point you have a five and a one star review. I was about to send mine back too after EIGHT HOURS waiting for this thing to work. Here is what you must do: Make sure the little spring wire loop is sitting in the very bottom of the bottle. You can turn and tip the bottle until it sits in the very bottom. Then, make sure the light bulb is centered. If it's not, remove the bulb and bend the light base until centered then replace the bulb. Next, run this beast for a good six hours then, turn it off and let it sit overnight! This will cause the wax to settle down after shipping. It will now work but it will still be different than other Lava lamps as described in the positive review below. After all these years in the business you would think Lava Co. would include better instructions and a description of this lamp's action (it does not look like the picture here, it's more like a storm on Jupiter). I guess they are old stoners over at Lava!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best lava lamp ever, April 10, 2008
I have lots of lava lamps because I'm an old hippie. This one came last week and I've got to say it's the best ever. I don't know whether it's just a difference in fluid dynamics in a larger lamp, but it does things none of my other lava lamps do. It's not just lumps floating around, it's more like a weird changing diorama. Stuff appears, turns into amazing shapes, and disappears. It's also very mysterious looking. It's hard to describe. It's just deeper than the other ones, with a lot more changes happening. I don't stare at my other lava lamps much, but this one keeps drawing my attention. It's also HUGE! Knowing it was 29 inches didn't prepare me for seeing the actual item. It is tremendous. I love this lamp and want more (but the other variations are always sold out). By the way, the lava changes color from yellow to orange to red, all against the purple background. Amazing.

1.0 out of 5 stars THIS LAVA LIGHT IS JUNK!!!!!, November 18, 2010
We got this lava light for our son's birthday. When it arrived it was so cloudy we couldn't even see the lava inside and the color we purchased was BLACK and CLEAR. There was a wire inside near the bottom that came up and wrapped over the side of the glass, we are assuming that once it turns on the wire will sink down and it will be ok. Right away looking at the lamp itself, I thought it was a defect but the paper inside said that it will be cloudy due to SHIPMENT and to turn it on and leave it on for 6 DAYS and it will clear up..........we are STILL waiting for it to clear up. To make matters worse, this was a gift for our son and since he can't even see the lava flowing....he wants to know what's the point of having it? I told him to be patient and that it says it will clear up. Well my PATIENTS is GONE and now it's to LATE to RETURN the stupid thing. They will take NO RETURNS after a certain time.....EVEN THOUGH IT SAID TO KEEP HAVING IT ON AND IT WILL CLEAR UP. THIS COMPANY IS SELLING DEFECTIVE LAVA LAMPS THAT CAN'T BE RETURNED.

1.0 out of 5 stars Grande Lava Lamps Come All Coudy!!!!!, December 17, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I was all excited when i found this product online. It was exactly what my boyfriend was looking for so I ordered one. It came later then they had originally said it would and when we opened the box and took it out it was not black and clear like it said it was supposed to be...it was black and milk. we did some research and found out that we were not the only people to have this problem and that running it for 6 days like it said on the papers that came with it wouldn't work. people were saying they ran theirs for a year and it was still cloudy. we tried running ours for a few days and saw no improvement. we decided to ship it back and have another one sent to us hoping it was just a bad one and that the next one would be fine. they told us they shipped it the day we called them but we didn't get it for another 2 weeks. to our great disappointment this one was also cloudy, i mean its so bad you can't even see the black lava moving in it. we ended up retuning it and they said they will return all my money (but im yet to see that yet) and we wasted a month of our time ....

trust me save your time and money and DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst Lava Lamp ever!, November 28, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Got my lamp , it arrived so cloudy , the liquid was white.
Totally disappointing, I wanted to empty the liquid and wax out , take a dump in the vase and send it back, at least my message would be clear.

Just an update 6 months later!
Guys I can't stress any more....do not buy this crap , it is nothing but rubbish.
I contacted Lava Lite and they kept promising to give me a replacement , more then 6 months later and endless emails to them , I have not received a replacement , their customer service is attrocious, just as bad as their lamps!
They lied , they insulted my intelligence so I will never purchase another product from them ever!
Save your money and your time, don't buy it!

Good folks at Amazon, please spend your money elsewhere. It you are looking to spruce up your living room with a conversation piece, don't get the black/clear version. I can safely say that this qualifies as the worst lava lamp of all time. Based on the picture of this item, you would think the fluid that the black lava sits in is actually clear - it's not. In fact it is so cloudy it's almost opaque - I kid you not! There is so much suspended particulate matter you can actually see a bunch of whitish gunk lining the bottom portion of the glass. This lamp is an unsightly monstrosity, and I am amazed that the manufacturer would even attempt to sell such a thing. I feel very tempted to drain out and filter the clear fluid in hopes to clarify it. Once I get a camera, I may decide to post an image just to show you how bad it actually looks in real life. The image they show here on Amazon qualifies as deceptive advertising.

1.0 out of 5 stars It arrived very cloudy, but I fixed it!, May 6, 2011

I purchased another Grande with a non-clear liquid and I love it. Although I read the reviews on this lamp, I took the chance that
maybe I would luck out and get a clear one. No such luck! Mine had milk like liquid in it. I let it sit for a week and that didn't work so I actually read the instructions! It recommended leaving the lamp on for days, I forget how many - maybe four. It actually helped and might cure a slightly clouded one, but not mine.

The liquid in Lava Lamps is not water, in fact, it is a company secret as to the actual composition. I can say that it is an oily like substance. I had converted 20 oz. Lamps to water, with good results. But, this is a 250 oz. lamp! I decided I couldn't make it much worse, so I tried it.

The procedure involves pouring out the liquid; I used the toilet. Then a careful and complete rinsing of the sides of the bottle and the Lava with distilled water. Once rinsed, you add distilled water, pickling salt and dish washing liquid in the correct ratio. It was an all night process, for me. The salt increases the density of the water as water is lighter than the original liquid. An object is bouyed up by the weight of the water displaced. So, one has to add salt, teaspoon after spoonful until the lava rises and falls as it should. The dishwashing liquid keeps the lava from sticking to the glass.

My results were excellent! The lava will behave differently in salt water than in the original liquid. But, I prefer it to my other Grande. It creates beautiful formations during the several hour period of warming up, which is normal for any Grande Lamp. The bottom line is I absolutely love what I created.

If you are tempted to try this, first leave your lamp on for 4-7 days, around the clock. Secondly, do NOT attempt this procedure based upon what I have said here. Instead, leave me a response to this review asking for the instructions and I'll give in-depth instructions. You need to have a great deal of patience to do this, as it will take almost a full day. But, the results are worth it.

One warning, do not Google instructions as there is one set of instructions that just won't work. Those instructions are for a 20 oz. Lava Lamp even though it says it is for the Grande. There will be a big issue with the metal cap and the rubber plug. I can explain how to get around this.

Alan

1.0 out of 5 stars Tried 3 times, all 3 cloudy, September 21, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
While amazon made the returns easy, all 3 of the lava lamps received were cloudy. Try and buy this product directly from the company. They did exchange one of the defective ones for one that works.
