Lovely books for younger listeners or young Able readers, February 26, 2008
This review is from: Lavender's Midsummer Mix-Up (Flower Fairies) (Paperback)
The interest level of these books is aimed at lower grades, the stories are pleasant, not violent, scary or obnoxious. The vocabulary/text level is much higher. It is not simple or dumbed down to be a 'reader'.On the ar web site this series have reading levels that range from 5 to 6.3 and this text is a 6.2
This book is great for very able younger readers, and we have bought them for 5 and 7 years old girls who started to read early and read fluently but need age appropriate stories and they LOVE them and gobble them up.
So a good listen for younger children and a good read for advanced younger readers.
The Daisy meadows series of Rainbow magic fairy books are great reads at ar reading level 3 up

I started reading this book to my 7 year old daughter. We didn't make it through the first chapter. It appears to be about 2nd grade reading level from the number of words on the page, wide spacing of the type, and ample illustrations. The plot, about a fairy who loves to do laundry and ultimately helps save the day, also wouldn't appeal to girls much older than 7 or 8. But the vocabularly and very lengthy sentences are way too advanced for this audience. My daughter had a difficult time following when I was reading. It would be even harder for a young reader to read herself. Some of the challenging vocabulary words include tentatively, queue, dispiritedly, infectious and oblige. There's just too much of a gap between the level of the plot and the reading level in this book. I'd recommend skipping it.

Great for advanced readers, June 12, 2010
This review is from: Lavender's Midsummer Mix-Up (Flower Fairies) (Paperback)
I find the negative review to be helpful to me in the reverse sense. I happen to have a 7-yr-old who's started reading chapter books at age 5 and is now reading at 5th-6th grade level. She's just finished her first reading of 4 books in this series in one sitting, in about an hour. She really enjoys the story which has no violence, no bad words, no bad attitude. She said they are very easy for her to read, prob due to the pictures, big prints, and large spacing.
I think the other reviewer jumped to the conclusion too quickly, that all the 7-yr-olds are reading at 2nd grade level and thus this is an inappropriate book for all of them.
Naturally for my interest, I think we need to have more of this kind of harmless story with advanced reading level in children's books.
